Instead of thinking about clouting him you should think about why you didn't see it coming and what you could have done to avoid getting into a situation where you had to break hard.

How come you were only five feet from the vehicle in front? Didn't you see him look towards his mate or vice-versa? Didn't his road positioning give any clues. etc.

Haha Laughing I get that urge too. Wink

Anyway, enough with the dirty joke, you probably should of been more than 5 feet away to begin with.

Only a fool breaks the 2 second rule Wink

I'm +1 with Andy here, analyse it and stop it happening again!

But I guess a well done is in order for not panicking and crashing into the guy Smile

Bit of a missunderstand there it seems. There were perhaps things you could have perhaps done to avoid it happening, but unfortunately it seems you just came across a knob-in-his-own-world situation. Kudos for braking in time and not dying.

I had a car U-turn from the other side of the road, it was sitting in traffic, before spinning out right in front of me, and really fast. She did it so quickly she had to mount 75% of the pavement on my side of the road. I was coming head on at the time, had she not done it so fast I'd have 1. Seen her or 2 Been right under the front of her car.

It's probably been the only instance on the road so far were I've actually been angry about it. I felt like kicking the crap outta the driver. I couldn't believe someone would be so stupid.

Well done on being able to avoid a dodgy driver Thumbs Up There will be many more to come!

What you do is analyse the cars around you before a situation occurs...
Is his road position wrong for his apparent route.
Loud thumping music.
Lightly customised kiddy car.
Young driver.
Too close to car in front.
Constantly pulling back then tailgating.
Staring straight ahead, not checking mirrors.
On the phone.

A few examples of things I look for in every car anywhere near me. They warn me of a potential hazard, 99/100 times nothing happens, but when it does I'm ready for it.
After about ten years you find you just know as if by magic when a hazard is going to occur.

We're not saying that it wasn't unexpected, just that perhaps next time you could see a few tell tale signs and that you should probably be a bit further away from the car to give yourself more thinking+reaction time for something doing this.

When we say study the situation we mean like, were there any tell tale hand signals before the manoeuvre.

You said he did a u-turn 5ft in front of you, which implies to me that you were 5ft behind him - that's the perfect distance to taste his boot if he slammed his anchors on.

I was going down an NSL road the other day to go and fill up. I kept a 2 second gap between me and the guy in front. The guy randomly just slams his brakes on and I'm just sitting there, clutching the brake, thinking "WTF is this guy doing." We came to almost stop before we started going again, my 2 second gap had turned into a few measly metres. Turns out he'd braked to avoid hitting a bird that walking into the road.

Although re-reading this post I've quoted and your original post, I think we've ALL mis-understood you, you weren't very clear!
I think that the OP means the car that performed the U-Turn was travelling on the opposite direction that the OP was travelling in. In which case it sounds like a SMIDSY to me.

There's no question this was a stupid move by the driver, but throwing your hands up and saying there's was nothing you could do is not the right attitude to take. There is plenty you can do:

- positioning: put your bike in a place that gives the most commanding view of the road, and makes you most visible.

- lights on, hi-vis clothing

- cover the brake in town traffic

- if the road is wide enough for a u-turn, expect one. If there is a layby or side-road to make a u-turn easier, expect one.

- a u-turning car will almost inevitably move to the left of their lane to get the best angle and space to complete the turn.

- people who pull u-turns usually prepare their hands on the wheel - putting their right hand at 12 or even 9, 10 or 11 o'clock to get the fastest turning. Some (often women - this is not a criticism, just an observation) put their hands on the inside of the wheel rim when turning the steering wheel quickly

- u-turning cars will always do it slower than the speed limit.

Much of the above was learnt from experience, when someone u-turned as I was filtering past them in stop-go traffic. With hindsight, many of the above signs were present.

Exactly what happened to me - but yes, we didn't get that bit because you didn't make it clear.

No, I got that. Seems like you did a good job to stop, as people have said. But you can learn from it and do something about it, not just leave it in the lap of the Gods.

Good job on stopping, not so great on the explanation.

Next time, maybe do a paint diagram.

We all make mistakes mate. (Not saying you did btw Smile )

Long as we can walk away and learn from em (instances on the road, not just mistakes I mean Laughing ) then I think we're all doing OK.

Shit, I fuked up after a perfect day on the road today and it WAS my mistake but no harm done and I will learn from it.

Fukin Beamer drivers...but that's another story... Laughing

+1!

I got cut up so many times on my CBT and they were ALL BMW drivers! Once was on a roundabout, which was un-nerving to say the least!

I've had to do 2 emergency stops since having my bike.
Both times scared me to death.

First time it was wet (i'm still getting used to riding in the wet)
Somebody decided to suddenly come to a halt and do a last min maneuver in their car, i was a fair distance away but the front tyre slipped, managed to keep the bike upright though with the aid of my feet.

And the second time was only last week,
I began to slow for a junction in some village area, could see to my right there was a car (fair distance away) and to my left was nothing so i checked the car to my right again which was still far away (in a 30mph zone) so i looked at my speed and knew i had plenty of time to pull out so i began to accelerate again, only to notice the car coming on the right must have been doing twice the speed limit!
so i put my brakes on, front wheel juddered and locked and the back brake worked fine but MAN it was close.

comes to show how you have to think three times before pulling out sometimes because people don't obey the speed limits, or see motorcyclists pulling out.
