Hi,
My little Honda City Express is the bike in question. It had a top end done by myself ( Confused ) about 300 miles ago. Has been running fine. Oil pump failure caused the blow up, so that got replaced too. Anyways, up until now i have been running with the oil pump set up correctly AND putting a bit of 2t oil in the fuel. I thought this would give the piston time to sort and the oil pump to run properly, also, i forgot to stop putting oil in the petrol!!
Anyways, my friend points out to me the bike will be running horrifically lean, so i drained the tank, and its just running on the oil pump and neat petrol. Only now though, it seems to be running lean. On just petrol, the plug is a really light tan colour, and the engine gets really hot and smells bad. It smokes on cold start up so im sure its getting 2t oil through.
Confused.com! I would have thought i would get it running lean when its getting 2 or 3 times the ammount of oil it was ment too?
If thats makes sense, help!!
Ta

Running lean means excess air in the air/fuel mixture making it run hotter, not too much/too little oil in the mixture.
Too little oil causes lack of lubrication. excess heat and damage can occur similar to running lean, too much chokes it up, fouls plugs etc. You sure the oil feed pipes are clear and it's getting all the oil to where it should be.

Hi,
I understand that. At first when i was running it on oil feed AND premix, it was running normally. I would have expected it to run lean as the premix'd oil was taking the place of fuel. It ran properly and didnt get hot, but smoked excessivly.

Now i have stopped the premix and the bike is set as intended, it is running lean (i think). The sparkplug is coming out light brown in colour, and running extremely hot. The lube is working fine. The pump and pipes were replaced when i rebuilt it. It seems to idle noticeably higher than it used to, but this isnt a real issue.
What would cause an otherwise standard bike to suddenly go from running normally to very hot and, according to the plug colour, lean?

Err, light brown, as in the “Normal” example, below, indicates it is running correctly
White, as in the “Too Hot” example, below, indicates a lean mixture.

Airleak in the induction area. Check that the cab is mounted properly. Spray WD40 or similar around the carb to head joint, if the engine revs change then you have proved the point.
Another problem area might be the crankshaft oil seals or a badly mated cylinder head.
