So today I learned of the BMW C1. Please could someone tell me wtf the point is of this plastic coated stuntroll bike? And why the hell does it have a seatbelt in it?

It seems a bit lame as a thread, but I'm really not just moaning about it. I genuinely want to understand what the point to this bike is. If it rains you'll still get wet. Wind will affect the balance more than a normal bike as far as I can tell. And why, in all the pictures I see, is no one wearing a helmet? Does it ride like a normal bike? Is it a scooter or is it geared?

-and- it looks so really very terribly stupid.. Like a retarded mobility scooter.

City yuppies who have lots of money but don't want a Vespa.

Thats it really.

They do keep your head dry, bu your arms still get wet. Its a scooter, and your still required to wear a crash helmet.

And its slow, 65mph at very very best.

As far as I am aware it is basically BMW trying to entice ecomentals onto two wheels. There was one at my work not long ago, miserable looking thing tbh. Some UK riders don't wear a lid out of protest, there was a court battle, I'm sure it ended with them being told to wear lids. Other european countries did what BMW told them too though so might slightly make more sense on the continent.

Other than that is a scooter with a roof and a seatbelt (who wouldn't want to be tied to a motorcycle in a crash??? Surprised ).

Yeah, there was definitely something along these lines going on.

They really started sprouting up when the London congestion charge came in and loads of people started looking toward bikes as a way of getting around town without being charged. As a marketing ploy - all the advantages of a bike with this lovely weather protection and safety like you'd get in a car. In reality I'm guessing, not so much.

They used to be a fairly common sight in the days I was scootering around London, these days they seem pretty rare.

I can honestly say that in 2-3 years of daily commuting, I've never seen one of those on the roads.
Maybe the locals round here are more enlightened and prefer to leave them in the showrooms. Rolling Eyes

Silly trinkets. They swap some of the advantages of a bike for very few of the advantages of a car. You'd still need weather proof gear in all but the lightest drizzle.

They seemed to find a brief following among emergency services, likely because you could swap the pillion seat for extra luggage space...

...but I'd imagine most of them are now owned by Colin Hunt types...

there's one in Manchester, he rides Upper Brook street, Birchfields Road and Kingsway on his way home. He was a nasty old piece of a biker, in my learner days he did some silly unnecessary petty stuff...a learner hater he was... ah well... that was back in the day... I think these he is scared of the Africa Twin.. he doesn't get close with his cage...

I'm sure the guy who originally took this helmet issue all the way in court used to post on here. Confused

Not finding anything via search yet, seem to recall his name was Peter Parker but that might have been his real name not his username........

I always see those BMW C1's in London, they seem popular with commuters. There is also one parked on a main road near here, covered in the yellow and black 'caution' tape. They look unstable. Confused

Yeah.. Seems pretty much like I'm not on my own with my dislike of them. I'm curious about this anti helmet court case. Got any more details?

It was a guy called Peter Parker back in 2003/4, google for more but these are the first few I found.

Hmm. I believe you don't have to legally wear a helmet on a trike?

If so, don't those little three wheeler scooter jobbies not count as trikes?

there is a varient of the mp3 that is classed as a trike (most aren't) it is determined by the distance between the wheels

No way i want a seat belt on a bike, when I crash I want to get away from the machine, not be tied to it.

Wheels come out like landing gear, see the dark bit behind the air intake on the left, that is a wheel on a stick.

Of course when the motor wears out/jams/sticks it will be quite funny to watch them slowly fall over at 0 mph.

No no, he was in the two wheel enclosed ones in Germany. Had the flip down landing gear. I remember him asking what happens if you forget to put the landing gear down and the German guy just said "You won't forget."

Edit: Correction, he was in Switzerland.

I imagine I would be trying to put my foot down instead of the wheel as force of habit.
