So, I shan't bore you with my ranting, and I just generally want to put the 6 months misery of Vietnam behind me... but today in the airport leaving it, I burnt my VN Simcard in the smoking lounge.

I actually speak VN fairly well, but I'd still never return there. If I won a free holiday, I'd give the tickets away to someone (whom I didn't like).

Worst country ever, worst people ever, and Hanoi is the worst city I've been to. If you don't like riding ratty old motorbikes or eating dog, there's literally nothing there for you.

So, any advances? Any countries you just hated with a passion and couldn't wait to leave? Anyone lived somewhere and got to know the locals, and just decided they should all be wiped out in a nuclear holocaust (fingers crossed eh China Praying)

Writing this from Bangkok, a city I used to find a miserable hole... yet after a week sat in Hanoi it seems a lovely peaceful place full of cheer and kindness.

I hated the Philipines with a passion, husband was on business and me and the girls tagged along, filthy smoggy Capital, Armed guards everywhere, they hated the Americans so we had to wear Union Jack teeshirts or hats etc to stop being spat on, peodos everywhere,

The shopping was good and in the sticks it was friendly but at the airport a guard held a gun at my head in front of my daughters because I wouldnt give him money.

The seas have been decimated of fish and coral as have most of the wildlife. The dive leader on one of our dives fucked off and left me and my husband wondering where the hell the boat was.

We got hassle everywhere we went from people asking to work for us, the only cool thing about the place was the Crispy patta resteraunt in Manilla and an earth quake caused by an active volcano in the middle of lake taal in batangas oh and I kitted the girls out for a year on about 1000 pesos, decent made stuff too so not all bad I suppose.

Id only go back if I were marched onto a plane at gunpoint, was the longest 6 weeks of my life.

Beijing the constant hassling everywhere and anywhere.

Having a white face causes the following to occur:

Oh me have special special price for you for tourist tat, a woman in some scum hole neighborhood literally grabbed my arm and wouldn't let go unless I bought something. It got to the point where I had to raise my fists at her to get her to let go. She then said something probably nasty to me. Confused

Oh Hi we're students and we'd like to practise our English with you, why don't you come for some tea or a beer? (Tea house scam).Confused

People stopping and starring and pointing at you quite overtly. Confused

Just going for a drink you'll get propositioned by WGs. Or passport hunters who instantly fall in love with you in an effort to marry you and get your passport. Confused

Approaching shops people see a white face? They turn round their price signs with a much higher price cus all westerners are rich right Confused

Ibiza...not nice.

There are nice parts, but the island is small and everyone knows where the nice bits are, so now they're not nice...which isn't nice.

Clapping That's the spirit!

Sounds hellish. Although I think your biggest issue was not being alone with a cock. Phillipines is far more sex-tourism orientated (or at least directed) than Thailand.

It's a very asian thing to find a good thing and completely saturate the market until you drive everyone away. I don't know what the return rates (ie leaving and then coming back another time) are for the philipinos... but Thailand is 50%... Vietnam 5%. I'll try to find out, but I'd imagine it's low. They don't seem the type to play the long game.

The funny thing with Vietnam is you can't move for new resorts being built everywhere... in very random fugly places. Who the hell are they expecting to come to them?

That, unfortunately, is cross the board tourist ghetto stuff in ALL SE asia (or at least anywhere I've been).

It's the trap of 'no one speaks English outside the ghetto, so you have to stay in the ghetto'.

Doug, VN was the only place I've ever been where holding a cogent conversation with the local, outside the tourist area, still saw them try to shaft you. Fuck, in Thailand if you can pronounce 'hello' or 'how much' half correctly you get local price.

Vietnam, jesus, they are just the dumbest bunch of aggressive short sighted 'we're poor and it's the yanks fault so therefore all white people owe us money', and they weren't just going for a bit higher... they'd triple the price. And they wouldn't just see if you caught on, they'd hang with it.

The wounds are still pretty sore from that country, but I spent the whole ride up enjoying it in spite of the Vietnamese, but constantly praying for nuclear death to be rained down on them. I'm damn near in love with one (viet) married girl, and would love to extract her from the hell hole... but the thought of raising a half vietnamese kid (or the faint possibility of it) fills me with dread. I call them alsation people, as alsations also apparently have an IQ of 70.

I actually took to trying to goad on a mugging in hanoi just so I could bury a few of the bastards. Seriously, I may whinge a lot about pretty much everywhere, it's me, erm, foible. But much as I whinged about Thailand, I kept my SIM and friends from the country, and always knew I'd probably return. Vietnam... I hope it sinks into the sea.

Dominican Republic.

Terrible time anywhere outside the resort, ended up being out for about 40 mins before the endless tirade of people trying to physically drag me into shops, or beach sellers trying to rent/sell crap and then not leaving you alone, before we got in a taxi back to the safety of the resort.

And I still remember the agony of squirting bisto out of my arse for a good 10 days after getting food poisoning there. Sure, that could have happened anywhere in the world, but it didn't, and at some point I expect I'll be telling my kids kids how grandpa phil squacked his pants in the Dom Rep.

Haha, true that holmes. True that.

My last day, taking the bike to flog it, some ozzy bint was after a helmetless lift to the other hostel, through the mental one way systems of Hanoi in rush hour. She got all miffed when I told her to go shaft herself.

My fate tempting in Vietnam has been fairly amazing, and somehow I still live and came out with (most of) my money.

Japan can wait until the ozzy's have made me yearn for a quieter life. Right now, I want drunken punch ups and manual labour. Clowning about looking like a porcelain doll for a bunch of midgets in the vague hope of a passport girlfriend.... that can wait a bit Wink

Ghost... I'm speechless. You stayed on a resort... Shocked

Hong Kong - which I visited when it was ours.

I arrived expecting:
Little people and all things empire.

I received:
Tall people, blood everywhere, mcdonalds, being shot at, drugged and almost raped by 3 fat old women, and expensive backpacker hostels.

When you are able/willing to heamorrhage money at a ferocious rate... ALL countries are lovely. You work on weather, essentially.

Vietnam, has LOVELY scenery. I'll give it that. Chuck enough money at avoiding the scummy areas, and it may pass for pleasant. I went balls deep in the place, as I tend to do. And I'd happily line 86 of the 87 million up against a wall.

South Korea wasn't a bundle of laughs.

They're not (as a whole) bad people, it's just such a joyless place. They've got a massive chip on their shoulder about Japan, which is weird since they seem determined to emulate the worst bits - they work hard, not smart, throw an infinite number of code monkeys at every problem, punish failure rather than rewarding success, and all without even the Japanese pretence about enjoying it. Suffering seems to be its own reward.

Eating out was OK, but Samsung canteen food was a wide selection of bell ends, claws and beaks with seven varieties of salty brown gloop on the side. Suffering again. I'd be dead now if it wasn't for Pringles.

Seoul is bleurgh. Battery chicken crowded, noisy, filthy, polluted as hell, it's all new build and new money. After seeing the few "heritage" bits, I quickly lost interest - maybe if I'd been a biker then, I might have gone exploring further, but the transport system isn't particularly weigukin friendly.

And the bars, Jesus wept, middle aged businessmen drinking themselves insensible so they can forget about another day of pointless grind and ritual humiliation. As to that, Big Bosses would call meetings and demand lengthy reports just so that they could ostentatiously have a kip and snore loudly. Nobody said a damn thing about it, they just kept presenting their flowcharts to a sleeping audience.

All in all, not the best 3 months of my life.

I only met two decent people there in five days. I bet one of those two was only just pretending to be decent too.

Weird. While I gather the workplace is sometimes a bit...odd, as evidenced through my brother and his girlfriends (often hilarious) FB status updates, they both still seem to love the place. And I don't know about canteen food, but what we were eating in (cheap) restaurants when I was out there visiting was awesome and dirt cheap.

WTF happened to your karma btw? Shocked

I suppose I had a cossetted life during my business (and some hols) visits.
Vietnam I liked in that I found the people very friendly/ intelligent and hard working. This was back in 1992.

I always dreaded the thought of Nigeria because when I went in 1986 it was dangerous and there were rip offs everywhere. I went last year (Lagos) and had a wonderful time. Went walking everywhere the security people said I shouldn't and met only friendliness. Traffic was hell at rush hours.

China ie Shanghai. The Mrs and I really, really like the place. I have been maybe half a dozen times and I have some super friends there.

Malaysia - bent as a 3-pound note below the surface gloss but not bad at all. Most folk there are very easy to get on with.

Where would I NOT like to go again - INDIA
Been there a fair few times. Mostly Mumbai but also Madras (Chenai) and Pondicherry - and some long journeys between them. Dreadful. I have also been to Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Pakistan and give me any of those in preference any time. I may try Goa - if pushed hard enough

Nope, can't say that there's a single country I've been too where I've not been able to extract any positive experiences, nor is there a single country I've visited that I wouldn't happily return to.

But, I've never been to Thailand or Vietnam, mostly because there's nothing about the country that makes me think 'Yeah, I really want to go there'.

@ Rogerborg - I spent a fair few months is S.Korea back in '99, my experience of the country is vastly different from yours. I'd agree that Seoul is noisy, filthy, polluted and crowded, but then I think the same about London, and pretty much any major city that I've visited, anywhere in the world.

I'd agree about the chip about Japan, but given their history, it's hardly surprising.

I did go exploring, and saw pretty much most of the country, I'd say the transport system is fantastic, cheap and pretty easy to get along with - I managed travel by bus, coach, railway, taxi, plane and boat all without issue.

I found the people to be, in the main, extremely warm, friendly and welcoming - I got numerous offers to stay at people's houses and to eat and drink with them. I had yogwan (guesthouse) owners ask me to come and eat breakfast and dinner with them when I'd only paid for the room only.

Sure, there were some negatives - I went to a few places only to be told in no uncertain terms that white people were not welcome, but these were by far and away a tiny minority.

As for the food, I absolutely love Korean food, I still get cravings for it even now, and have to take a trip to the nearest restaurant or order up some supplies by mail order.

Still, each to their own, and all that. Dull world etc

Thumbs Up
