Sorry if this post has already been covered before now,
But I am debating getting a helmet cam... but as there are so many different types, i wondered what cams are the best value for money?
Like, Decent video quality but not paying a ridiculous amount for Smile

there are some cheap on ebay, but when you pay around the £20 mark i imagine you get like an old school camera phone quality lol

Thank you

As far as I know, the GoPro HD Hero seems to be one of the better ones, and for under £200, you can't really go wrong. Smile

I have recently experimented with using my ipod nano 5th gen (the one with the camera on it) as my iphone superseded it for ipod duties.

With a bit of blue tac or similar, it sits perfectly inside my helmet, with the camera just peaking out over the chin bar (sits well under my nose, so doesn't obscure vision) I have to say, the quality isn't actually that bad, and with the visor down, you can just about record sound too.

I realise you wouldn't necessarily go out and buy an ipod just for this, but I had completely forgotten about mine until I found it when clearing out a drawer. As I said, it does work quite well, and I bet they can be found on ebay pretty cheap.

Do you just want to record video or are you after commentating as you ride round? If just video then the Go Pro would be perfect but it doesn't have an external mic socket which would limit vlogging to very poor voice levels at best.

If you want to talk for England as you ride around the the Drift HD170 takes an external mic and seems quite popular, as well as great quality video.

yeah i just checked them out on the website.
The video they have loaded to show you the film quality doesn't do it any justice though. the built in mic is so pointless. more an annoyance! haha cheap though.

But are they any good? I've tried a cheap camera and wasn't particularly happy with the results.

What exactly do you want out of the cam ?

If its a simple just cover my arse on the commute. Then pretty much any will surfice.
If its to post up ride's etc. Then you need to set you sight a bit higher and look to spend some cash.

This is a HD key fob cam Think it was £30.
Some of my others are on cheaper cams.

These Replay XD look good.

That ReplayXD looks nice.

What puts me off a GoPro (amongst other things), is the fish eye it gives off, doesn't look right at all

I wear a helmet cam every day for commuting, in fact I feel funny riding without it.

I use a ContourHD 1080p set at 720p60 for daylight commutes and 720p30 for night commutes.

GoPro and Contour are basically the Coke and Pepsi of the helmet cam world, except GoPros look even more stupid when worn Smile

If you want to see what the Contour's quality is like then you can see all my videos to date here:
www.youtube.com/user/JameyCam

Obviously YouTube compresses them a bit more so the actual files direct from the camera are better but if you switch to 720 and go full screen you should get a better idea.

Unfortunately YouTube don't support 60fps vids so you can't see how smooth it looks but it's most handy for slow-mo footage that still looks fluid. If you look at my skip truck video you can see a decent slow-mo example.
