Since blowing my car up last winter, I’ve been hiring a car for a, very, reasonable amount per month.
Two weeks ago I got a puncture, so I took the car back to the hirers, who decided I could do with new boots all round.
Fast forward two weeks, to last night, I have another flat, on inspection the, miniscule, sidewall of the nearside rear is fooked, (that’s a technical term), rendering the tyre irreparable.

Dropped the wheel off this morning, at the hirers, and asked for a replacement, they said I could pick the wheel up at lunch time.
I turn up at lunch time, to collect the wheel and new tyre.

Them: “That’ll be 75 Euros”
Me: “No chance”
(It’s a hire car FFS, why should I have to pay for a new tyre?)

Technically, I didn’t have a leg to stand on, their fine print covered it, apparently!
The only leverage I had was that I’m a good customer, (aka cash cow), for them, and as far as they know I will be hiring the car for the foreseeable future.

The next 10 minutes were taken up with me refusing to pay and them demanding payment, a pointless argument about insurance, and apparently it’s my responsibility to make sure I don’t get a puncture, Laughing !

After a while I put 50 Euro on the table, said “take it or leave it” and walked out with the wheel.
I didn’t quite get the wheel into the boot, before it was repatriated to the garage.

A further 10 minutes of, pointless, arguing ensued.
In the end I stumped up the cash, grabbed the wheel and told the desk jockey that they’d just lost a customer and slammed the door on the way out. Unfortunately there weren’t any customers in the showroom to maximise the flounce.

Fast forward ten minutes, my mobile rings, this is ?*?*?*?’s, “we’ve spoken to the manager and in your case we’ll give you a full refund!”

What makes this little episode, somewhat, special, is that you never get cash back over here, it’s either a voucher or goods of similar value, cash refunds are unheard of.

The moral of the story……………………… Moan More! Mr. Green

Expecting you to pay for a puncture in a hire car seems a bit harsh! If it's a long term lease car then maybe, but if it's a hire car then I'd expect them to sort it.
Surely a phone call saying "your car is parked here with a puncture, I'm ending the hire agreement come and pick it up."

That's a bit cheeky. The low price you're getting it for is based on you maintaining it. If you wanted a short term hire with no added costs, then presumably someone else would have been happy to charge you a lot more for that.

Thanks to the good advice of Sid I managed to knock the price of my car hire down from €35 to €21 per day. To be fair i had just flown for five hours, sat on a coach for another hour, walked for 45 minutes up a hill just to get a haircut by a lovely Polish lady in a small Cypriot village (who offered to cut it for free if I went there twice more.) I had kinda passsed the point of compromise by the time I spoke to the lady at the hire place. She is also picking me up tomorrow to collect the car, God only knows what it will look like!

posted by kindle. Spelling and grammer be damned.

That's ~£232 a month, about what it would cost to lease an equivalent car in the UK. OK, if you spit your dummy every time you get asked to do the maintenance that you agreed to, it's a better deal.
