I would say the GT and GS are so different, they barely stand comparison.

Shouldn't have too many problems with GS parts, I think lots of the GS range shared a lot of bits and they made them for a long time (in bike terms).

Not sure about GT bits though, I reckon some fairly essential parts are probably getting in short supply now.

The GT range of shaft-driven Kawsaki 4's were introduced in the 80s and produced until the mid 90s as far as I know, therefore I would doubt that parts supply would be an issue with a bike as common as these were. Before the CB500 there was the GT550/750!
The GT of course was a dispatch riders favourite and still gets used by some of the old boys today. A tough, simple, shaft-drive workhorse.
The GS on the other hand were essentially a 70s model line of mostly chain driven bikes (apart from the GS850G which proudly had a shaft) that were at one time the pinnacle of Suzuki's big 4-stroke range but which were discontinued in the later 1980s.
You could probably say the GS's are appreciating classics and are therefore getting priced accordingly whereas the GT although still popular in some quarters is seen as a rather less interesting machine.
It seems a peculiar combination of quite different models though, why are you interested in these two specific ranges?

Ah, rather surprisingly, I missed the word 'Kawasaki' from the OP and thought we were talking Suzuki GT750, which is a watercooled two stroke triple and nothing like a four stroke IL4!

As cheeseybeaner said, parts for the Kwak are ten a penny, I still see a few on the road and ebay is always a good source of them, in varying conditions.

I would personally prefer the GS, but that's because I like older bikes.

Just to correct cb though, you could get a shaft drive GS in 650 (straight or Katana versions) 850 and 1000 forms, plus there was a later 1100, which is now rare but I don't think they're worth much.

Edit: out of curiosity, I just looked on the bay and there is a stunning GS1100L shaft on there, all the money, but looks fantastic (nothing to do with me!)

There's a guy near me with a very neat looking black cafe racer'd GS-whatever-G with the shaft, I expect its a nice grunty old ride. Certainly sounds very nice indeed with its throaty little 4:1.
I'd only seen the GS850G shaft before myself and a guy with a 650 Katana shaft, thought that would be considered a different model line. Were all the shaft drive GS's available as UK bikes or just as imports? A lot of the shaft custom variants seem to crop up.

AFAIK all the shaft variants were sold here, albeit some of them in not very big numbers; I think the only one we never got was the full dresser, but the Goldwing had that market sewn up here, we didn't get the Kwak or Yam dressers either.

I think a lot of the custom models are probably imports though, mainly because most of those big shafties were either triked or chopped, so most of the good ones left are in the US.

I would consider the small Katanas to be GS's, they were only standard GS models with trendy bodywork, unlike the big ones which had some significant differences to the normal bikes.
