Who has got a trip planned and where are you going?

I'm itching to get out of the UK on the bike but I'm unsure where to go. The last thing i want to do is just sit on mways for days on end.

Three trips planned for 2012.

May = Scottish highlands (might not interest you, seeing where you're located!)
June = Isle of Man TT
August = Balkans (trip in pre-planning stage - a few gents off this forum will be going hopefully, more than welcome to join us?) If you're interested in hearing more, just drop me a message with your email and I'll add you to the distribution list (when I finally get around to sending out an email)

So far about 7/8 of us are doing London to somewhere in Germany in a day, then planning to head up to denmark and beyond for however long.
Some I believe may well be heading to Czech instead but if you fancied an blast into Germany to start you off you'd be welcome to join in.
A couple of BCFers have said they may well be coming

Provided the Mrs-to-be makes her mind up, we may be doing our honeymoon on the GS, going either around the UK, or around north western Europe. We're not sure yet. I've got a couple of routes worked out, anyway.

London -> Mongolia (Possibly Vladivostok/Magadan/Road of Bones)

Leaving late April early May, Likely route through balkans to turkey, then azerbaijan then a ferry from baku to either turkmenistan or kazakhstan, then onwards.

Once there if funds allow i would ship to the US or home, failing that, ride back on a different route Smile

Nice - what are you budgeting for that? And what bike are you taking?

London to Dublin for business/pleasure
London to Germany for business
London to Brussels for Business/pleasure
New York/East Coast to West Coast of America for pleasure... Estimated May June time.

Can't friggin wait for the latter which is in the planning stages at the moment.

I did London-Brussels-Nurburgring-Kolding-Black Forest-Zurich-Como and back last year which was fun but want a more relaxed riding holidya this year hence the hire of a harley in the states. Smile

1500-2500 (possibly a little more if it was overland spec already) to buy either a DRZ400 or a WR250 (leaning to the 250),

Another thousand or so to insure and outfit it with a longer range tank and bash plate, hand guards, HID lights etc... aswell as buy me some gear/luggage, a decent sleeping bag and other bits and pieces.

And then as much as i can save in the next 3-4 months as well as credit cards if needed for the petrol/occasional lodging/food/border crossings etc.

I reckon around 4 grand for bike and gear and another 4 grand (as much as i can scrape together) for other costs.

I dont know how realistic that is but that's the rough plan.

Sounds brilliant.

Personally I would be staying away from the WR250 purely from a compression ratio perspective - that sort of bike is not going to like the yak-piss fuel you will get in Mongolia etc.

Also it will surely be ball-breaking for the long tarmac stretches.

I am going to start saving for a RTW trip, I'm inspired!

There's a WR250F and a WR250R which are two quite different bikes.

Yeh I'm aware of that. Both have fairly high compression ratios IIRC.

Its the F model i have been looking at,

I figure it will be physically smaller too (than a DRZ) seeing as im a shortie.

If something else in good condition comes up i will consider it but that's the main two contenders, looking to buy in January so i have a few months riding around, see what any issues may be.

On the flip side i hear the injected WR might cope with mountain passes better than the DRZ

The F is a competition enduro bike and needs revving to get any power out of it.

It might get a bit tiresome on a long haul trip like that. Anyway, thread derail, awesome trip though Thumbs Up

Thanks for the offer but the balkans trip is probably too much for me as a first timer. Your tour through france and germany sounds ideal.

Planning on riding Canterbury to Manama Bahrain.
Going the top of this side of Europe, then cutting down at the East side through to Turkey, Syria, KSA. Got the visas sorted for June.

Depending on how tits up this new arab spring shit goes the middle east part might have to be skipped and just circle back around the bottom of Europe.

Planning on using a Vfr750, or a Pan if the girlfriend wants to come around the europe parts and fly from Turkey.

Unable to go to Germany again due to olympics (stupid work), so doing Scottish Highlands either late May or July.

Either before or after a holiday to Las Vegas.

Good thread this, I've been looking around trying to get some inspiration for a trip of some sort this year.

Just don't where to go yet or when for that matter.

Did France last year and have done Czech and Morocco.

*hmmm wanders off to read trip reports
