So I got my badass bike. The guy I bought it from declared it SORN. It still had a TAX disc. To unSORN it I have had to buy a new TAX disc (1 year). I still have the old disc and it has about 6 months of TX still on it.

I would like to surrender the old disc for a refund, however I have to tell them why I am surrendering it. The options are as follows:

Quote:
I have recently sold, transferred or exported the vehicle and I have already told DVLA

the vehicle is being kept off the public road (SORN), and it won't be taxed in the next 21 days

the vehicle has been scrapped by an Authorised Treatment Facility

I have changed the vehicle's tax class to a nil value tax class (such as 'disabled')

the vehicle has been stolen and I have reported the theft to the police

None of these cover my circumstance. I want this 6 months TAX money and I do not wan't to SORN the bike again.

Rogerborg, what do I do?

Can you not just contact dvla an ask to unsorn it, surely if there's a current tax disc on it... it's taxed, so just insure it and wahay.. brum brum

No, the ONLY way to unSORN it is to buy ANOTHER tax disc.

Pinched of the directgov site

Buying a vehicle that has a SORN

If you buy a vehicle that already has a SORN made by the previous keeper, that SORN will come to an end on the date you buy the vehicle. You must make a new SORN if you are keeping the vehicle untaxed off the public road. You cannot transfer a SORN.

so what it means is the sorn is cancelled and the tax disc is current.. since you bought the vehicle with a current tax disc just go and insure it Dance!

Check if it is actually sorn'd at all:

https://www.taxdisc.direct.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/app/enquiry?execution=e2s2

Only enter reg number and make.

If it is taxed it will have a date of liability in the future and at the bottom it says licence not due or licence due to expire under vehicle status. If sorned, it will say unlicensed under vehicle status.

paddlesat16's correct; when a vehicle changes hands (i.e. is sold/bought), the sorn notification on the vehicle expires. If you wish it to be sorn again the new owner must re-declare it.

As you don't wish the bike to be sorn, just don't re-declare it.

I'm unaware of, fully, how the sorn notification works; as in I don't know if declaring sorn would cancel what you have left on a tax disk (it wouldn't surprise me if the dvla was like that), so that's something someone else will have to answer.

But personally, it's no longer sorn and you have a tax disc that shows 6 months on it, I'd just be insuring and riding that baby Laughing

I re-sorned it when I bought it. Stored it for a month or so then bought the tax disc.

If you bought the tax disc it is now un-sorned... surely?

Old tax disk becomes the value of 0 when sorn unless you surrender beforehand.

I think you want to get some free cash from the past tax disk from previous owner?

Wont work as they will just remove tax on said vehicle or tell you that its got newer tax on it.

If there is 1 thing you dont want to do...its piss of the tax man Laughing

Bah, don't ask me, I "owe" Capita Group Plc (trading as DVLA) £200 for having 2 bikes neither insured nor SORNed. Rolling Eyes

Oh heck, just tick "the vehicle is being kept off the public road (SORN), and it won't be taxed in the next 21 days", get the cash in your hand, then it's their problem to claw it back.
