What bike am I thinking of?

- >125 (to avoid the 125 noob tax)
- 2 stroke (for the power)
- Air cooled
- Easily available cheap parts
- Bulletproof reliability
- Enduro/dirtbike styling
- Will wheelie in every gear
- Second hand
- Road legal
- can hit 90MPH

Also, where can i get one?

Such a thing does not exist. Specifying air cooled completely destroys your options.

Otherwise I'd just buy a Yamaha DT125.

You pay less road tax for a 125.

Quote:
Not over 150 = £16.00

151-400 = £35.00

401-600 =£53.00

Over 600 =£74.00

Never mind, I just realized the arrow on "125" is pointing right not left. "over 125" not "under 125"

You will need to remove the part about wheeling in every gear. Unless you want some super expensive, piston life measure in hours bike like a CR500.

Yes, but you pay considerably more a bike that is CBT compatible. An extra £20 or so in road tax is nothing compared to the £100 or so you save by buying a full license only bike. Hence >125.

Suzuki RMX 250, but you'll pay the 'two stroke 250 premium' which is probably greater than the 'noob tax'.

I'm not sure that you know what you want, if you want reliability then 2 stroke is probably not a great idea. I'll just post something that I want that fits most of your criteria...

The Suzuki DRZ400/DRZ400SM

400cc single 4stroke - half decent power

Reliable

Pretty numerous so parts are available and fairly cheap

Numerous so not that expensive to buy

Not uber fast

Can wheelie

Supermoto/trail bike versions:

apart from hitting 90.... tiocks just about all your original boxes.
Yamaha 175 'Enduro' built between 1978 & 1982 (UK)... ok its a DT175MX!
Road test of one in my Show & Tell resto-post: >HERE<
TBH there aren't too many genuine 90-up 'dirt-bikes', they are too flappy at speed, and anything that does start nudging those sort of velocities tends to be less off-road biased, as a duelie.
DT175MX, delivers genuine 15bhp, and can nudge 80 on a fair day, on the right gearing. An unrestricted DT125LC is about as powerful, the later DTR125's with full power valve mech, in full-power trim, as oposed to bodge 'De-Restricted' are about 22bhp, and can nudge 90ish if the 65mph speed governer is properly by-passed, but different legue of sophistication, and while still pretty rugged and robust, most have thier knackers thrashed off by learners!
Old air-cooled DT is tough as they come, and easy to work on; only real down side is drum brakes and crappy 6v electrics; but brakes in good fettle and adjustment not 'bad' and lights can be upgraded.
Curiousely NOT so cheap to insure; knobly tyres catch a loading, mine is 50% more than my 750... but that says more about how 'boring' a CB750 is percieved and how ancient I am!
Bikes greatest virtues are that it is simple and durable and easy to maintain. Its still pretty minimalist, and low tech.
Parts are readily avialable, many common to other models, significantly TY175 trials bike, and the air cooled DT125's, readily available, machine was in seriel production for third world markets until fairly recently, and I think still made in Tiwan... certainly a lot of new 'genuine' spares eminating from there on e-bay.
But biggest asset was it packed a punch way above its weight... of which it had very little! barely 100Kg kerb weight, in full street trim, and 16/17 claimed bhp, independently measured 13 'rear wheel' bhp. Claimed bhp was only 2bhp, barely 12% down on bigger DT250MX, that was sleeved down DT400 and weighed in at near 160Kg, 60% more mass! (400 only claimed 22bhp, and was deemed a 'bit' of a monster in its day!)
More lively than earlier five speed, five port twin-shock 'Enduro' models, and with the ground breaking, mono-shock suspension, in a completely different, and almost modern legue for handling, it has all the virtues of a 'classic' with many benefits of a contemprary machine, the support, and prices, making it a very apreciated 'Practical' classic. About half the posts on Yam-Club workshop, about dirt bike resto's are comparing notes on DT175MX's! We cant ALL be wrong to want them!
