So... I have just got back from a friends place as I went to have a look at his old b1 zx9r. He had an accident on it about 2 years ago and the bike has been in storage since. My thought was to use it as a winter project ready fir next year.

He has said that after the accident the bike was written off due to a mark on the frame and the body work being totalled but was not categorized. What does this mean? And what would it mean with regards to trying to insure it in the future.

Cheers

Si

You'll most likely find out it's a cat c but make sure he actually still owns it and not the insurance co.

Ime insuring a cat c/d write off is the same as any other bike. It might affect the value in the event of a claim though.

Sometimes you hear the phrase "not recorded", which could be what he means. It basically means that the vehicle got damaged at some point but the insurer never actually took possession and disposed of it as a write-off.

I'm not sure of the circumstances in which this happens, perhaps TPFT vehicles, or if you buy it back?

Ok thanks guys. I will do some more digging. How would I find out if he still has ownership of the bike and not the insurance company.

He will still have the V5C registration document if he still owns it... when an insurer pays out on a write-off, they will ask for the V5C.

Not strictly true, a insurance company can pay out for a bike and also let you keep the bike (certain insurance companys will) for a nominal fee, for my cat d written off zx636 a1p it costme 233 quid to buy back and keep,so i had the v5.

Did his insurance company pay out, or was it the third party insurer?

If it was the third party, they could've just sent him a cheque and that's it, he keeps the bike and it's unrecorded..
