I have just got my bike through the MOT yesterday and have insured it online today through ebike.
The bike is currently on SORN so I need to tax it now asap but the problem is my reg is still not coming up as insured on the MID.
My policy started at 18:15, should it be on the database straight away or will it take a while.

I have checked my account and they have taken the full years premium out earlier. So everything should be OK.
Its annoying still not being able to ride my bike on a technicality.

Thumbs Up

It can take up to 7 days, it all depends on how quick the insurer updates MID. Usually it's quite quick.

If you go on www.askmid.com , you can check if it's on yet.

Doesn't matter if it is on the MID. So long as you have a piece of paper that says it is insured (legitimate piece of paper, not just your own made in word) then it is insured and legal.

The MID will be updated with your details soon. Although my bike wasn't on there months after I was insured.

I checked on ask MID and it's not there. I checked before trying to tax online.
I don't have the insurance certificate as it obviously needs to be sent to me.
So I won't be able to tax at post office until I have that.

I guess if I just try and tax it online, it will not work until its on MID.

You should be able to print that of straight away from your user area @ ebike. Or they will have emailed you a copy.

A point to note is that as the bike is sorn, that there is no 5 day grace for tax disk in post.
So if you do it online. you should wait till the disk arrives, or run the risk of failure to display.
Only you can asses the risk on that one.... Karma

I printed off the stuff they sent me in an email, went to PO and they wouldn't let me buy tax because it wasn't an official document, I had just printed it. I then went to a tiny local PO and they did it no problems.

They have given me a cover note in PDF format but my printer died recently and I haven't had chance to get a new one yet.
I may have to print it at work and try my local post office.
Thing is it's quite a large post office and my friend said they wouldn't let him tax his vehicle without the official document you get in the post, so he ended up doing it online. Due to work commitments I will find it very hard to travel further afield trying to find a post office that will do it.

I assumed I would get home tonight, tax it online and be good to go.

Its just annoying, the bike has been off the road for ages.

I have worked tirelessly on it during my evenings after work recently getting it road worthy.

As it had stood unused for ages it needed quite a bit doing to it and not ever having worked on a bike before this one, it took allot of head scratching, swearing and some help from BCF.

I managed to get it through the MOT first time, which I was pleased about.
Then I managed to get insurance which was also a pain as I have a less than exemplary driving record.

Now after all this time, money, effort and all the major hurdles being completed, the only thing stopping me riding is information being updated in a database.
I am now entitled to tax my bike but can't because of their system.

I was also needing to use it to go to the BCF carting/minimoto event this weekend.

Twisted Evil

It is complete tosh, and insurers and the government are effectively conspiring to fiddle us out of actually using the insurance we've paid for. As Keith pointed out recently, you're not technically insured until the physical document is in your possession, which seems positively stone age.

Anyway, what they all said. (Laser) print, post office, job done. It entirely depends on the counter muppet, but just brass neck it and insist that it's the original from the insurer and how the heck are you supposed to pay the VED if they won't accept it.

This. Laser printer, pokey post office who are less likely to be on the ball/care. Done.

I would be inclined to take what the database lists with a pinch of salt..
Considering a nice policeman pulled me over for no insurance 2 months or so after I had taken out and paid for my policy in full Laughing

DVLA State:

Quote:
These are usually a printed or laser-printed document, or a plastic credit card style document.

Insurance certificates downloaded directly from the internet by the policy holder are acceptable from 30 April 2010 (this applies to GB only). Fax copies are also acceptable.

I'm gonna have to do this when the Post Office opens. Will I get a numpty or will I get a cool dude/dudette I wonder Very Happy

Anyway, apparently it doesn't *have* to be a Laser Printout looking at the wording they use.

Hmm, that's interesting, and surprisingly sensible.

If you want a real laugh, you could just download it on to an iPad or similar and hand that over. Watch them reach for the "PANIC - NEW SITUATION" button. Very Happy

I printed mine out on my old deskjet and took it into the post office right outside New Scotland yard, and walked out with a tax disc. Took minutes.

The insurance is now on MID.

I have a really strange problem now. The system doesn't recognize the logbook reference number I am entering.

I have tried online about 10 times and twice by telephone. I have checked it is definately the right number I am entering by looking at the picture they provide which circles the number you need to use.

How can this be?

I am unable to get to a post office for the next few days which is really annoying.

They seems to be making it really difficult for me to obey the law.

I so wish the dealer I am collecting my bike from tomorrow wasn't taxing the bike for me, I'd so do this. I shall have to remember to do so when I next get a tax disc just to see the reaction.

I checked askMID and the insurance is not showing then it dawned on me the fact it doesn't officially start till 9am tomorrow morning might have something to do with it (though no guarantee it'll be showing up then).

Well, I printed mine out on the old inkjet as well. Took it up to the post orifice with MOT and V5 and she gave me a nice tax disc.

A bit of sense from DVLA at last Thumbs Up

Dunno how far you'd get putting it on an Iphone though Laughing

Finally taxed today.
Has been a real hassle though. I never got the online system to work, no idea why.

Got cover note printed and went to a small post office only to be told they didn't do tax and I had to go to the local main post office.
The main PO did it with cover note without any issues or concern.

Finally got all my docs sorted so I can use bike Very Happy

As it is law to have tax they should make getting it a bit easier. Maybe let you buy whether you have insurance yet or not.
Once upon a time I could see the advantage of only issuing tax when everything else is in order as a police officer could see on sight, if a car is taxed and if not it may not have other docs.

These days though with ANPR they can tell what docs you have anyway Rolling Eyes

You'll lose 10 days if I give it to you starting from today.

Fukin thieving scroats. I have never got 10 days from them though Laughing
