Einstein:

"Strive not to be a success, but rather to be of value."

Define "value".

Success is personal, value is placed on you by other people.

You can be valued, but you can't be succssed...

I'm reminded of the terrible 'climb the ladder to success' joke, you know, the one that ends with a massive gaylord introducing himself with the words 'Hi, I'm Cess'.

There's room for one more in the Zombie Survival Bunker. Do you let in Einstein or Hetzer?

To make it harder, neither of them have brought their stash.

In which case neither is of value, and should be left to the brain sucking undead...

Both are totally subjective, which makes them pretty difficult to define.

I thought success was intangible, but value had usable worth?
So the world nose picking champion has success, but no value. A competent mechanic has value but is unlikely to ever be successful.
Of course you have to aim to be successful at gaining value Thinking

Who determines what is valuable? Keith made some lengthy points on this in the thread about buying Gold.

success = succeed = come out on top

value = use = useful

Ie, it's better to be useful than come out on top.

In the corporate cock gobbling it may not be true, but in real life, useful trumps everything.

value = valued = appreciated

Is the alternative/extra meaning, thus it's better to be appreciated than come out on top.

All very true. Success is worthless without value.

I'd say that depends on what you want out of life.

Success tends to pay better and if money is your motivator, then you'll be a happy bunny.

Success is selfish.

Value is not.

Depending on your personality, you could be happy with either. I'd rather be successful (i.e. rich) than valued, I couldn't give too much of a fuck how useful I am to other human beings.

Then you will struggle to be successful since most ways of making money involve providing a service/being of use to other humans.

Just because I don't care if I am useful to others doesn't mean I'm not.

Do you really think the average CEO/entrepreneur/venture capitalist/etc etc gives a fuck about being useful/valued beyond how it benefits himself?

That's because most of them (more than 90%) are genetically psychotic sewage.

Being valued beyond how it benefits yourself is different to not caring how valued you are at all. Wink

Well, if we are splitting hairs:

My first statement was "I couldn't give too much of a fuck", the "too much" suggesting I give a fraction of a fuck, this fraction is the bit that benefits me.

For people I am not sure there is an answer to that. Too much open to personal opinion, with some things being of value to some people but being of negative value to others (eg, someone whose contribution is building a road, where the opinion of value will vary between those for and against road building).

Furthermore, someones opinion of their own value can be greatly different to others opinions of their value. Some feel worthless irrespective of how others value them. Others feel what they are doing is of value even when most would be disgusted by that persons views on what is of value.

All the best

Keith

So we've established that Einstein wasn't quite the genius he was cracked up to be. The perils of over-specialisation I guess. Cool

Lets just say I don't think he valued the skills or opinions of a hair dresser.
