Im picking an L reg CBR400 up in the next hour or so. Its a 94 bike, with 30000kms on the clock. It has no service history (which im a little anxious about) but im taking a mechanic/honda enthusiast with me to look at it before i exchange beans.

Just wondering if there are any "genetic" problems which can arise in a CBR400 like the one mentioned

Cheers

ash

Interested in any spares or aftermarket parts Ash, I would gladly help. Trying to brake my bike at the mo. I have things like heelplates, 14t front and normal rear with a 525 chain brand new in the box. And a few other bits and bobs!

Also have a Shorty exhaust, custom made for me which has only been used for 10 miles.

Give us a shout if ya need anything, and make an offer, as this shit has to go! Thumbs Up

30,000kms isn't a lot especially if it's been serviced. Mine didn't have a written service history as such, but from looking around the owner's place I could see they did all the stuff themselves. Had more kms than 30k

Things to look out for:

Jumping out of gears on full/heavy acceleration. Particularly 2nd gear.

Smoke, rattles, knocks from the engine

Make sure it starts fine from cold, and after the test-ride cut the engine and turn it on a few more times to check the battery has been charging, and it starts ok.

I can't think of much more that is specific to the CBR, so have a good look round - forks, brakes, controls, clutch, oil leaks, water leaks, shock and all the rest.

And of course consumables - tyres, chain/sprockets/ brake pad wear. You can use these to knock down the price.
