so FINALLY got myself my first bike. nothing mental - er6f - but i love it!
currently shut away in my garage, but i will be leaving it in various places, car park at work, friends driveways etc etc.
can someone recommend good (but priced for someone whos spent all their money on a bike) security gear. Ideally something i can take about with me?
im happy to upgrade to something better when im a bit more flush - this just needs to be the basics.
cheers! ____________________ er6-f, triumph street triple R |

Allow me to be the one who advises that no matter how much security you have on a bike, if the thieving scum want a certain bike, they will find a way of getting it.
We all know this, but we all still try hard to avoid having it happen
I use an Oxford chain, and huge fuck off padlock and CCTV inside my front window.
Putting a raincover on helps, too, it puts them off (slightly) cos they have to faff with it.
Happy riding. ____________________ Not nearly as interesting in real life. |

There are two types of theif you need to try and deter.
The casual joy rider who should be put off by the chain/disk lock etc.
The career steal to order criminal who you can't normally put off. They'll scope the bike out and come tooled up to defeat any physical security then work on the alarm back at their lair.
IMO I don't like alarms. No one pays any attention to them and I've heard of bike being lifted into the back of a van with the alarm blairing and no one batting an eye lid. ____________________ My Flickr |

I've never used a disc lock but there are stories of folk wrecking their ride by moving off (Attempting to) with the lock still on the disc.
Reputation of Cool shattered.
I only have big Fuck-off chains and big fuck-off padlocks.
I used to put two big Oxford chain and padlocks front and rear Belt n Braces.
But I canny be arsed with the hassle now.
If you are determined to use something then there are a few things you need to consider.
1) Bolt Croppers can cut through any chain if it is not thick enough.
2) Keep the lock and the chain tight to the bike so there is no slack that Scum can get access with croppers etc.
3) Park where it is not too quiet.
But as our forum Mum says, If scum want cha bike bad enuf then they will take measures to get it.
But it is not all as bad as T' Internet/MCN will have you think. Most theft is of the peds and skoots not 'real' bikes.
It is a pity they do not bring back hanging (or even a right good kicking) just for horse thievery and cetera.
Look for anything made by ALMAX. That stuff is made by bikers for bikers so all the science is applied to the metal.
But not cheap.
Though the cost of lost NCD and other loading factors, by the other half of bike theft crew (Insurers), far out weighs the price of a good bike chain.
Happy Biking BTW. ER6F is a great ride. ____________________ W-ireless A-rtificial L-ifeform L-imited to O-bservation P-eacekeeping and E-fficient R-epair

Read the stuff on this website.
Watch this.
Be prepared to pay a bit over £100 for an uncuttable lock & chain combo also consider it will probably last you the rest of your life.
Get a tough disk lock.
The cyclone 2 alarm is relatively cheap however NORMAN COOK IS A TOTAL FUCKING NOBBER. Do NOT expect the instructions to make any sense (degree in electronic engineering ay? where from? the university of Funland?) and do not expect any kind of customer support.
If you have a garage, you NEED a ground anchor you can concrete into the floor. Get a mate to weld together some bits of box section in a 'Y' shape, search for the 'Y' anchor online and copy the design (can be fabbed from bits of scrap).
Someone ALWAYS says if a thief wants it they will blah blah blah moo moo moo baa baa baa. The fact is, your bike is not worth ANY risk to steal. If it was sitting there unlocked, someone WILL wheel it away however a limited edition gold plated rocket 'busa it is not. |
