I am breaking my bike for parts, I need to cancel my insurance, after which am I liable for a fine within a certain amount of time as I have an uninsured bike ( heard lots of things about having to have insurance on a vehicle in your name)

Once i've cancelled the insurance I need to tell the DVLA it's not going back on the road, what do I need to tell them?

I intend to sell all the parts from the bike and then sell the frame with the V5.

Just declare it SORN. No need to have it insured if it's declared off the road. Thumbs Up

You only need insurance if it is being used on the road.

If you don't use it, you don't need to tell anyone. Unless your tax runs out then you need to SORN it.

There is a section in your v5 about scrapping your bike. Just tick the box and fill it in and send it off.

Embarassed If the bike is taxed, then no matter if it used or not it has to be insured. As per new regs this year.
If you SORN it, then you don't need to tax it.

Given its being broken up. SORN would be the way forward.

The new vehicle insurance law means the registered keeper of a vehicle must keep it taxed and insured while using it on the road.

You must declare SORN if your vehicle is:
•not taxed and off the road
•not insured and off the road
•taxed and uninsured - you must insure your vehicle or make a refund application with a SORN declaration to DVLA

If you're not insured and haven't made a SORN, you could face a penalty.

If you have a vehicle that is taxed and not insured which you will be keeping off road you need to return the tax disc. You can do this on a V14 (including nil value discs) and declare SORN at the same time.

OK thanks,

I'll declare it SORN.

Then cancel my insurance.

Is there a timeframe between cancelling insurance and declaring it SORN that I need to keep to?

I can see me cancelling my insurance today and sending out the SORN form Friday and me getting a nasty letter?

The new owner can put it on the road after, I assume they will complete the new registered keeper part when i sell it and that's my part done.

Yep Thumbs Up

I would also make sure the new owner know's they need to SORN it if its not going to be taxed straight away. As SORN stops when you sell it.

All done, declared SORN, V14 tax refund completed and insurance cancelled.

If you haven't already posted the items then make sure that you get a proof of postage receipt from The Post Office. It will cost you nothing but may save you a lot of hassle if DVLA choose to lose your documentation.

Ocht DVLA are on the ball. They wouldn't lose anything or mess up details on a legal document.
