Coming home tonight and after reflection I have to say hi viz clothing is not always a life saver.Sure it will make you more obvious but if drivers are'nt looking then what's the point.I nearly got hit at a junction where I live I was on the main road which is 60mph but I wasnt doing that,I was directly behind a car that had slowed down to turn left.I was maybe 4 feet from it and it turned and I powered up but within a few seconds a car came out from the left to turn right to go down the road towards where I had came from, but she only looked as far as the car in front of me and then (her left) instead of right beofre she went and boy did she shit herself as me too.A near miss a brake from her and a swerve from me put some distance between us but it was close.I would like to point out I have 100% brighter lights on and reflective strips on my bike also but it is all useless unless drivers open their eyes in traffic situations and "BLOODY LOOK" before they pull out my speed was maybe 40mph......................a close call my heart was pumping.

Bad obs.

If you were 4ft behind the car turning it's no wonder she didn't see you. Especially if you were on the far side of your lane.

I was in the middle of the lane and I did allow the car to turn i didnt just manoeuver around it.I think 4 feet while not a good distance is good enough on a busy road in rush hour.We all hate being in the wrong and I would admit if I was but I genuinly believe I was in the right which is no good if I died lol.

Legal fault 100% the driver that pulled out on you (if you had gone into the side of their car)

In reality as a biker, you should look out for hidden cars and expect people to come round every corner.

More bad road positioning than bad obs.

Thats something I am going through a bad phase of at the moment. Im leaving smaller and smaller gaps at the moment and had a few 'Ooops shat' moments when someones braked.

God damn my roadcrafts gone to pot recently.....

The above clearly defines the kind of junction I was at (she nearly hit me in the side) and I could see she only looked once in my direction before pulling out.there are accidents most of the time there that is why I keep to the right near the line to give drivers better view of me.if I had of been further back I dare say she would of made the same mistake, looking left n right more that once at a busy junction is a must esp since if you include cars turning on to me from the left and right then that is the junction I was at busy as hell I know.also when I said 4 foot away from the car in front of me turning maybe between half to three quarters of a cars length so maybe not so close as I said.I do not ride up to cars that close I like to keep thinking time n braking time within my margin.the road condition was dry so good braking anyways .

You're completely right, and it was the car driver's legal responsibility to look carefully in that situation, but she didn't and they don't, and they won't, and nothing that we can do will change that, ever.

So, OK, you weren't 4 feet behind the car. How far back should you have been? When the car started braking, presumably from 60, a 2 second gap is 176 feet. At 30mph, a 2 second gap is 88 feet. At 10mp, a 2 second gap is 29 feet.

And that's the recommended gap under normal conditions, not when you've identified a clear hazard. You know that junction is dangerous.

Unless you're overtaking, there's no benefit to being close to it at all. Make as many changes of position as necessary to make yourself visible, hang back, be the hero and take responsibility for giving way to avoid an accident. Yes, that's in the Highway Code too.

Well I now will leave a bigger gap but the highway code of 88 feet at 30mph is a laugh at 30 with my bike I can easily stop within two cars in dry weather.today's tyres and brakes are better than they were 10-15 years ago..

Have recognition and reaction times got faster as well? Neutral

It's two seconds for a reason. You need time to recognise that ZafiraMum has actually dawdled out in front of you FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU.. plus the time to react to that - which includes making the decision whether to brake or swerve or both. You're already half way there before you begin to haul on the anchors or start a swerve.

Nobody ever crashed into anything at too low a speed.

Cool, I nearly won Euromillions... That didn't happen either Sad

Did you not realise that the car infront of you blocked the other cars view, to that driver the road looked clear at a glance.

You could have avoided this whole thing by maintaining your distance behind the car infront, with a 4 foot gap you can cover yourself and your bike in as many reflective trinkets as you like but you still wont be seen.

Too close, too fast, poor obs, bad positioning.

That near miss was avoidable if all the above had been 'checked'.

Glad you're ok though. A few pints of hindsight are a wonderful thing.....I may get it right 99% of the time, but you can be sure that twat Murphy and his dumb law will be around for the 1% I don't.

Assuming this was at night time, all she would see in two headlight lights glaring towards her and an indicator going. If you're too near that car turning then your headlight would be blocked and she wouldn't see it.

I don't trust anyone with turnings like that, I come off the power and just stare at them wondering if they will pull out always hovering over the brake lever Shocked I'm super paranoid Very Happy

So in effect you pulled out round the back of the car before it was fully round the corner.

You are lucky she was on the ball and spotted you..... Most drivers would be looking the other way.

Best bikes do 60-0 in a tad over 100' with ideal conditions and rider.

So not going to be under 50' I wouldn't have thought.

Though, 15' + 10' space then double that and you could be talking in stopping in the space two cars may take up on the road; not that saying so really means anything.
