I'm after a new lid. Currently on my 3rd Suomy Dark Metal (XL) but they don't make them any more Crying or Very sad I also have a spare that I picked up in Makro for £40 that, altho it has the relevant safety specs, doesn't even have a make or brand name but is a really good fit.

Here's what I'd like:
- replaceable visor
- plenty of ventilation, I wear glasses and suffer a lot from condensation
- good sharp test rating (if poss)
- es up to large or extra large size for a large, round head; it needs to be "long" enough between top and chin if that makes sense?
- quiet at speed (altho I don't go that fast I do quite a bit of motorway riding)
- readily available in the shops as I need to try on
- lightweight if poss as I have some neck movement issues from previous injuries

Here's what I'm not bothered about:
- make. I prefer a helmet that fits me well to a branded one
- price. Taking the credit card so price isn't an issue altho obviously I don't want to pay more for a lid than I did for the bike..... Laughing

So what are you currently wearing, what are its good points and does it have any bad ones?

Cheers! Thumbs Up

The Roof daytona is a spectacular lid. I have tried loads of diffewrent types but always seem to end up back with a Roof.

Im on my third one now, they are light, comfy give great visibility and I have yet to have one fog up on me.

Age. After about 3 years of regular use the inner tends to shrink a bit and they get loose - at that point I retire them as I no longer trust them. Bought my first one in 2002 when I was still on Ls, then in 2004 I picked up 2 from the NEC as they were on offer and wore them one after the other. The last one is on its last legs now! Sad

Wash it, makes it expand and feels like new, if you trust your non-branded helmet that is Laughing

Does it have removable liners? haha!

Nothing wrong in washing your non removable inner.
Hair Shampoo, Shower hose, Bath towel then let it dry for a day or maybe two.

Negative. I found that the visibility was awful, and it destroyed all semblance of peripheral vision due to the narrow visor apeture at the back by the sidepods. Not a bad lid, but not a great lid either.

Best lid I ever had was my old Shoei Z-one. Shame they don't make them any more. My Arai wasn't as comfortable, nor as quiet. My AGV was noisy as heck, but it had the internal sun visor which was Cool .

Not sure what lid I'm going for next... I've still got my Arai and I might not be able to afford another Shoei. AGV always do well on the Sharp ratings, and despite the noise I might well go for another AGV S4 SV because of the cool sun visor. Or I might go for an equivalent HJC which are supposed to be good...

HJC are good hats. You get wot you pay for though. I found mine fell apart after about 7 or 8 months where as the more expensive hats I have owned seem to be made of better stuff.

My Shoei was superb at everything, Quiet, Light and made me look cool as fuck. Cool

I've struggled with Shoeis in the past, I don't think I have a Shoei-shaped head. Sad The ones I've tried on have all felt too small in terms of they seemed to be very high on my face once on and the chin bar was actually around my mouth when it should have been further down.

However, I shall head to J&S this coming weekend with some ideas in mind of what to try first now and hopefully find something that fits well and is a pleasure to ride in.

Thank you all who have replied so far. Very Happy

I use an HJC, this morning, was trying to fumble with my chin vent on the motorway to no avail, only to discover that the vent flap had come off, so was permanently open Smile

Other than that, its been a good helmet. It's a few years old now, and that's the first 'problem' I have had with it.

I have the Hornet DS, great lid off offroad/Town Work but terrible at speed, if you do a lifesaver the chin piece catches the wind and whips your head around.

I have an Old Arai RX7, I think it is 4/5 years old now. Cracking lid. I paid £380 at the time but that was very cheap, now they are £5-600 it seems.

Before that most lids only last me 12/18 months before things would break on that get ratty (I ride most days). The Arai has been brilliant. It's really light and the Vents are superb. I broke the visor mechanism on it (my fault) a new one cost me under £5 IIRC, I had a vent break (again my fault) a new one was £9. I replaced the lining about a year about because mine was skanky I think it cost about £40. New Genuine visors can be had For £35 and it came with a pinlock system. When it needs replacing I will buy another, it is expensive but I honestly cannot see any other lid lasting as long as this one has. Considering I paid £100 of one that lasted 12 months and £180 for one that lasted 18months, £380 for one that lasted at least 4 years is a bargin.

Another vote for Arai - love mine, it's without doubt the best lid I've had and I've had many. Great fit for me, good vents, pinlock visor, comfy on long trips and quiet.

Got mine for around £400 as well. My lass got an Arai for £190 (yeah it was so last season) so it doesn't have to bust the bank (or card!)_
