Ok First I can't decide whether this should be here or in Workshop and short of posting it in both decided on here as it's technically not a problem more of an experience.

Not been on here for ages as my work is during the summer months and so I have only just started to get time off.

As per info below passed my test at the beginning of the year went and got myself a 1992 yamaha xj600s (didnt want newbie as know it will at some point hit the deck)

Going on my first major ride this weekend and wanted to get to know the bike and learn how to look after it myself.

Today I...

Changed my oil and filter and did a engine flush.
Checked my air filter.
Changed my fuel filter.
Changed spark plugs.
Check cam chain.
Check the spaces on my inlet and exhaust valves.
Stripped and checked front and back brakes.
and
Balanced my carb's

I know through friends that most bikers do most if not all of their service/repairs.

But I had an absolute blast doing this today and even though it was all with the help of a bike mechanic friend I am really happy to be able to do learn how to do the basics on the machine that I am ultimately responsible for having on the road.

Sorry if its in the wrong forum, hate it if you like just had to write it!

Off to Salamanca on Friday morning and cant wait for the next couple of months which will be my riding season!!

Good story mate, I'm always busy too but as sad as it sounds i'd love a couple of days to sit and do a bit of servicing on my bike too.

Got the bike in August and done the oil and filter straight off but the chain and sprocket could do with replacing and i'd like to do the brakes too. I only get out on it once a week if i'm lucky so it's not too urgent to get the jobs done but want to do it for peace of mind and to learn a few things. i'd enjoy it too even though what might take guys on here a couple of hours would probably take me the whole weekend! Thumbs Up

oh yeah enjoy your riding season Smile

Heh, I get you. To make it the perfect day, you'll want to set fire to something, then throw a dead animal on top.

Sounds great matey. I'm jealous you managed to get the time to tinker for so long Smile

My ZX9 is in need of all of the above stuff. Im fine with the majority but how did you get on with the Valves and Carb balance?

How long did it take you all in? Smile

Well done.

Wish I had a bike mechanic friend. Would like to do more myself but have no idea.

lol she still is Wink

It took the whole day and I was just the student... learnt a lot though and having a ex racing bike mechanic as a friend to teach you is the handy bit!!! Hubby's zzr1100 was in for a overall today and that took virtually the whole day too,Wasn't there for all of that though!

Valves where all fine for the age of the bike etc only tricky bit to that was getting the top off and out and then messing with the gasket seal before refitting.

Carb balancing was done with the mercury type gauge and the hardest thing about that was finding the location for the adjuster screws and getting the tubes to fit on the adapter screws.

Winter is great for us loads of time and great weather for riding!
