Has anyone else seen this? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-15762967

Basically it's a chemical compound that they're applying overnight that then sticks certain chemicals to the ground rather than them going into the air.

They say;

Quote:

Between midnight and 06:00, the roads are first swept and jetwashed by a machine similar to a road dust sweeper.

Then a solution of calcium and water is applied by a modified winter gritting machine with a very fine sprinkler-like system attached. Once it settles it is hardly visible.

The aim is to stick tiny sooty particles called PM10s to the road. PM10 is produced by exhaust fumes as well as tyre and brake wear and can cause asthma, cardiovascular problems, lung cancer and premature death.

Not sure if it will or not but although this is a particle glue, does anyone reckon it might be a bit dodgy on grip? I dont really ride much in London now but for those that do, thought it might have been worth a shout so you can look into it more. I'd assume they've thought of bikes but you never know.

If it was April 1st I'd have though this was the story.

Surely if it's a glue it's going to improve grip rather than hinder it.

Glue is a misleading term, different kind of salt would be more accurate.

It shouldn't be an issue for grip, probably Calcium Magnesium Acetate. Used as a non corrosive alternative to salt as a road deicer (so it doesn't make your bike rust), also seems to have been used to trap solid pollutants in several trials.

It will likely have a similar effect on grip as salted roads (i.e. it's fine) but with the added benefit of regular replacement and less corrosion on your metalwork.

Ham - just wondered if they were using the word glue even if it was judge a chemical sludge, just because it seems to 'glue' pollutants to itself.

Donny - thats pretty cool actually, less corrossion is always a winner.

Fact is often stranger than fiction.

Take catalytic clothing for example which incorporates nanoparticles that catalytically break down air pollutants.
