Would expect there's an some kind of electrical 'surge' some where.

What exactly is happening to them?

What happened was this used bike, aprox 2 months later a friend took it out, started up and they just didn't work, about may last year this happened got someone to repair them, they went straight away again managed to find a sechond hand one.
In the mean time I baught another bike and have compaird all the voltages and earths, they all match up the same as other, fitted the clock and it all seams to work ok but i have no idear why, whats more woring is will it happen again?
