It gives me a nerdy warm glow, that someone long ago took the time to invent a word that means to leave by a window. It wasn't necessary, we could just say ' he jumped out of the window', but defenestration seems so much nicer...

Defenestration has been my favourite word for many years, I love the fact that English has a word for the act.
The Defenestration of Prague is my all time best historical event after the war of Jenkings ear

I can remember leaving a female nurses hostel early one morning via the window,but I could not recollect the word or words that I used at the time except 'Look out here comes Matron!'

Fenestration in architectural terms means all the openings in an elevation, so to be pedantic 'defenestration' means removing the door openings as well - top word though!
