With not being able to work i might have to get a loan. I've got national insurance to pay, my van needs tax in dec, insurance and it's run out of mot and i'll have my tax bill to pay in january.
Is there a loan i could get that i won't have to start repayments for a few months and can pay off in one go if i have the money?

A deferred-payment loan is what you want. Good luck getting one at any sane interest rate in today's climate.

Try you bank and see if they can give you some solutions?

If you have a good record with them, maybe your bank manager can help you out?

Could you look at alternatives like a fixed 0% card for 12 months?

No interest and pay what you want of when you want. Just got to be mindful if you can't pay it off after the 0% what the interest would be. Either that or just then move the balance to another 0% card.

Guess it depends on your credit rating really.

Regards,

Nathan

0% deals on cards generally require you to make regular minimum payments each month in order to keep the rate. If you fail to make a payment, it reverts back to the original rate.

Phone the Inland Revenue and reduce payments on account. Since you have no income your first payment on account should be reduced to nowt. The balancing payment though won't be reduced to nil.

You can also risk reducing it to zero, Inland Revenue will charge 5% interest on the amount of tax you were supposed to have paid pro rata.

With the NIC see if you can get a Class 2 Deferment. When I first started my sole trade I made bog all, you make under £5000 or something and you can get an exemption certificate you need to do one yearly and supposedly in advance. You can also simply not pay it when they demand you pay it you tell them your income is bog all and you won't owe it.

Could always try credit unions? 15-26% APR better than the gang rape payday loans.

Can't you tap up the olds?

From what I've read in other threads, they'll be jumping for joy that you're giving up biking, so ask them for some help, as a kind of return arrangement.

Meanwhile, you don't need to renew your insurance and MOT immediately, just declare your van SORN when the tax runs out.

As for the tax men, just tell them they'll have to wait until you've got the money, the worst they will do is give you a little fine, which you pay off later, when you're earning again.

For future reference, put some money by each month, to cover your tax liability; that way, you won't get caught out when times are hard.

I did have money saved up but that ended up going on the van. I thought it'd be ok, 5 months to save the money up. Didn't know i'd be in this predicament though did i.

All Halifax personal loans have a 3 month break between receiving the money and making the first payment.

I've had a couple of loans from them and they seem to have been ok.

But like in my position that means when work does come by, and your bank balance is restored your vehicles isn't 'ready to go' so it costs you more in the long run.

If he keeps the van going now, he's literally ready-to-roll when it's required. Thumbs Up

Don't dis-agree, I did the same last year.

I got a log-book loan (I'd never advise anyone to do it) against the car, doesn't matter how soon you pay it back the interest rate still cripples you.

I paid mine over a month or so, and it was over double what I borrowed. Sad I only need the cash to keep it taxed.

Really wish I'd borrowed from people and paid it back with mates rates.. at least then the cash goes back to people I know could use it rather than some scummy operation. Thumbs Down

Well i might not have to take a loan out. As long as my wrist is fine (cast off next monday) then i'll be able to get working again once my sick note runs out (won't be covered by ins while sick note is in force). Don't have to worry about my back as long as I don't do anything too strenuous, had a reveiw today the consultant said i should of been operated on and that he was going to kick up a stink, because there was 5 definite fractures not just two like was put on my notes. Good news is it's healing well and only 2 are fractured now Very Happy .
So if i can get earning again slowly and just save what i earn i should be ok. Won't be able to use the van but i can go to two of my customers on my push bike.
