Dealers said it might be flooded and the spark plugs need cleaning, which sounds like bollocks to me.

Bollocks or not, there's no harm in taking a look.
Um, aside from that, killswitch, clutch switch, sidestand switch would be the obvious points of failure to check. ____________________ '10 SV650SF, '83 GS650GT (it lives!), Questionable DIY dash project, 3D Printer project, Lasercutter project |

So it's got fuel, and since it's 2010 bike probably compression too.
Is it actually sparking?
Coils etc.?
Shouldn't be the kill switch or sidestand cut out as it wouldn't even turn over if these were borked.
Did you start it then immediately stop it, or do anything else weird that could have flooded it? ____________________ My Flickr |

It could be more serious mate!
I had those same symptoms , nothing coming up on the FI diagnostics light to indicate a fault code. Same symptoms happend to Fawaz (The guy who lives up in Tranent with a CBR600RR). It turned out out it was the Cam Position Sensor!
I tried bump starting, firing off a car battery etc. Fuel would be injected into the engine because of the stench in the exhaust, but it wouldn't fire up. The fuel pump would prime the moment you turned the ignition on. The solenoid would engage and try to fire up, but would refuse to fire. With the HISS, if the immobiliser is enabled, you won't even be able to fire it up or get the starter relay to click.
The CBR600RR's DO have a known issue with the cam position sensors in the past (according to my honda mechanic). It can also go on 929's and 954's as well so be warned! The part is about £140 to replace, but essentially, it tells the ECU not to spark up because when the sensor goes, it doesn't know which stage of the 4 stroke cycle it's at!
I'm not sure why bikes don't run wasted sparks so that the plug ignites every time the piston hits TDC!
Either way, I've checked in the haynes manual and there's no mention of diagnosing a cam position sensor fault, so it's bad times... Those sequence of events which you've described is EXACTLY what happened to me and my mechanics at southern cross diagnosed it as such. Cost me £500 all in to get fixed because there was a LOT of diagnosing to do, but that's ONE suggestion your mate can take to the garage! ____________________ The Tot 2019 Z1000SX - 2007 R1
