It started out as one of these

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/Picture280.jpg~original

that I photographed up at one of the London Bike shows in 1977,never realising that I would ever own one let alone thinking that the bike would end up looking like this

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/BikesBikesBikes187.jpg~original

I will be posting up about this as and when I can compile the photos into some semblance of order.

This was how I saw the bike,in an advert for Dunlop TT100 back in 1978 or so.

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/HondaLeaflets025.jpg~original

My CB550F1 had been stolen from outside of my flat in Bromley Kent and I was without for about one month while I organised another with an interest free loan from my Dad.The bike was a friend-of-a-friends so I bought it at a good price in 1979 for £1000.It came with a fairing which was soon removed and sold as at that time it did not look stylish.

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/BikesBikesBikes2012.jpg~original

Here is the 750 outside of my flat. This time my bike is locked, padlocked and covered up,even just to keep some of the weather off it.

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750004.jpg~original
https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/Earlydays005.jpg~original

And this was how I enjoyed the bike for a while. It was much heavier than my stolen CB550F1 and at this time I seriously considered changing it for another CB550F1 that I came across in a bike shop in Beckenham, near to where I worked. But Deans wanted me to give them money and the 750 in exchange for the older 550F1 that they had in the shop - so I walked. From then onwards I started to use the bike more and found a new character that I had not realised was there.

More in a while.I have to go and work.

Pretty soon I wanted to modify the 750 as at that time there were plenty of F2s being driven around.I missed out on going to the Isle of Man TT in 1979 due to repayments of £100 a month to my Dad,so plans were made to go in 1980.
The first thing that I did to my F2 was to paint out the silver spokes on the Comstar wheels. The only problem was that this bike was still my only form of transport and I did not want to leave the bike in pieces at my parents place,so it was a case of starting first thing in the morning so as not to rush it.

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750006.jpg~original
https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750092.jpg~original

But I soon found other items in various magazines to whet the appetite and so I bought a 2:4 seat from CDS in Dartford and a 'Track outlet pipe' from Harris Performance.

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750010-2.jpg~original

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750008.jpg~original

The new seat was originally meant for the CB750F1 and to all intents and purposes they were supposed to be compatible - but the gap at the front was not to my liking and so was either returned or sold on to someone else.
But that pipe - ye gods it was loud!My girlfriend at the time loved the seat and the noise from the exhaust, but her parents hated it even when I pulled away carefully from her house after we had been out.

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/Tims750c1980002.jpg~original

With the imminent visit to the Isle of Man TT Races in 1980,I bought some Jota bars for that proddie racer look as well as a small wing mirror from a Kawasaki Z1R.The pic above shows how things were on that years Mayday Run when we were just about to leave the Little Eater/Happy Chef on the way to the coast.I had no pillion that day as my girlfriend decided she wanted to go to the TT with me but wanted me to pay - which I could not afford. So she walked. So I removed the pillion pegs so that I could enjoy the ride by myself - something I still do today.

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/Tims750c1980001.jpg~original
https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/Tims750c1980.jpg~original

The last two pics were taken the week before the off to the TT Races. And I bought myself a decent crash helmet - a black AGV from Mochecks in Clapham.

More later.I have to go and eat.

Stop all this 'eating' shit and tell us how it got from typically modded 70s big bike, to burnt out shitheap.

Well, the TT Races taught me one thing at least - do not try and ride the course like the racers as you will come a cropper,as my friend found out on the way to Port Soderick one afternoon. So the next day we went down to have a look at the road in the morning hours. While we were there my friend took some pics of me emulating the racers on the 750

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750002-1.jpg~original
https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750003-1.jpg~original

But all too soon the races were over and it was time to come home

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750.jpg~original

But it was the style of the racers that caught my eye and I quite liked what I saw

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/BikesBikesBikes2151.jpg~original

When I got home nothing was the same ever again.Pretty soon I started to remove indicators and messed with the style of the bike as my youngest brother abley demonstrates

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750093.jpg~original

So i found a Rickman/Hondastyle 3/4 fairing painted up in some Honda colours and set about changing things around.

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/BikesBikesBikes148.jpg~original
https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/BikesBikesBikes270.jpg~original
https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/Earlydays003.jpg~original
https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/BikesBikesBikes2142.jpg~original
https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750005.jpg~original

This was okay except that my knees bashed on the rear top of the fairing and that I quite liked the idea of just the top bit of the fairing. The frame mounting was not to my liking either,so I looked into another way of doing this. But then I quite liked the idea of not having a fairing at all - more of that style later.
So,a short while later i had the opportunity to change address where I had the security of being able to work in better surroundings. So over the Winter of 1980 I decided to strip down the bike to its bare bones so as to work on the frame and the engine into what would reincarnate into something special.Part of this was dictated by the fact that I had to remove the engine so as to replace the 25p (at that time) tacho drive oil seal.On my old 550F1 I could remove the top end of the engine to work on things like the cylinder head or barrels, but no such luck on the 750F2.So,the beginning of 'the change'

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750012.jpg~original
https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750013.jpg~original
https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750011.jpg~original

And while I was contemplating modifying the frame I had this Yoshimura catalogue that made interesting reading. As in,why not punch out the liners to a bigger bore, like to 836cc instead of 736,with a modified lumpy camshaft etc.

Once I had visited Dixon Racing down in Godalming and lightened my bank account by quite a few drinking vouchers,I walked away with 4 nice shiney new 64.5mm pistons that would increase the cubes by quite a few cc.The ports were smoothed, the valves lapped in and the engine was cleaned as much as I could in the basement of the house that I was sharing. It does not look any differant on the outside, but underneath - oooh yes!

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750016.jpg~original
https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750015.jpg~original
https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750072.jpg~original

But it was the frame that received 'the treatment'.I wanted to be able to access the top-end of the engine and swap cams over as and when I wanted to ride abroad, what with the unknown quality of petrol abroad. So the lumpy cam would be used for thrashing around in the UK and the standard cam for tooling around Europe.

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750018.jpg~original

I had bought some Reynolds 531 chromoloy steel tubing from Colin Seeley (the renowned frame builder) from down in Erith at a time when he was building the Phil Read Replicas, and later the Honda CB750SS.At the time of my visit I also bought a seat for a PRR and a spare seat base, with the intention of having a tank built around the modified frame. After the engine had been carefully lifted back into the new type frame I was helped to lift the combination outside to carry on with the assembly.

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750019-2.jpg~original
https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750069.jpg~original

The rolling chassis gradually took shape with new CMA wheels, drilled discs,Aeroquip hydraulic hoses together with a myriad of small pieces that went together to make up something recognisable as a bike again. At this point I had decided not to use the fairing. The sit-up-and-beg seating position was the style that I was looking for initially.

More soon

Well, the rebuild was long so in the meantime I had bought a little CB125S to get about on.It was probably the worst bike that I could have chosen as the girlfriend hated going on the back, after being far more comfortable on the sumptuous pillion on the OEM 750 seat. But,not long after having had a special tank and seat unit made for me by the same person who made tanks for Barry Sheene,I encountered some spilt diesel.

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750020-2.jpg~original

But I soon had the bike back on the road, albeit with a battered exhaust. The tank was punctured by the headlight brackets and spilt petrol all over the place when I first picked the bike up after my off.Luckily this spilt fuel did not ignite when it got onto the hot exhaust pipe.

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750021.jpg~original
https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750089.jpg~original

I had read in a 'Bike' magazine about how CG Exhausts in Dartford made silencers,so I ventured down and asked for a chrome pipe to be made up for me.As I was running S&B individual filters I needed to change the jetting and in the early '80s this was a hit-and-miss calculation.I read loads of which way to go and so this meant regular strip downs of the carbs to change needle positions and main jet sizes - I had hair in those days

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750074.jpg~original
https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/Picture505.jpg~original

I changed the bars again while the others were being changed about.Luckily at work I had plenty of machining equipment that I could utilise to make good some of the damage from my 'off'.

(Before anyone makes a comment about the following pic,I am not adjusting my goolies)

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/TimsCB750F3-4017.jpg~original

CG Exhausts had made me a new silencer and had it chrome plated, which was not what I had asked for but I was quite pleased with the style so bolted it up and went with it until something else came along, the Harris Track outlet pipe being put to one side for the moment. In the meantime I bought a house with a garage and friends soon found it more convenient to pop by for a chat and a coffee

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750075.jpg~original

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750024.jpg~original

This pic is of the 750/836 parked at Brands Hatch. On the way home I had an interesting encounter. My friend was on his Z650C3 and we 'made good progress' home along the A20.He admitted later to being flat out and we were neck and neck for a short distance - then I changed into top...byeee!

One Sunday I just wanted to be alone. My girlfriend did not understand but decided to jump on her bike and to give me some space. So I just rode to nowhere in particular and stopped for some pics

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750022.jpg~original
https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/BikesBikesBikes201.jpg~original

I stopped on the way home and I remember it being very cold once the sun started to go down

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750080.jpg~original
https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750023.jpg~original

Some other friends also had a CB750F2 and were interested in what I had done to my frame,so I went down to the pub and took the tank off to show what I had done.

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750097.jpg~original
https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750096.jpg~original

I had more plans for the bike.I did not want to be using it for commuting anymore after what had happened with the spilt diesel. So I looked out for another CB550/4 like I had owned previously.

More soon

I read an article a few years ago about how if you reduced the weight of the vehicle, then the power to weight ratio would increase. At the time having access to some serious machining equipment helped in this aspect as I was able to make just about anything.I was also able to sign my own chits for some lightweight materials on the pretence of building some test rigs for testing printed circuit boards.Strange how dirty your hands can get while apparently testing some PCBs.I also had access to stove enammelling and black nickel plating facilities, hydraulic tube benders,a welding shop and a degeasing plant room. All very handy for the budding custom bike builder. But it was the heavier items like the centrestand which made up for a substantial weight of the frame. So it went.I chopped out the frame tube that held the brackets, and in went a length of 531.The battery box looked like it had been attacked by termites as well as many parts being drilled for lightness. These were then grit blasted before being painted or plated.

Enough chat.Some more pics.

I liked the style of the Jota bars that I had found from somewhere.Whilst at Mochecks in Clapham I had also come across some standard Honda shocks that were longer than the OEM ones for the F2.They were either from the CBX1000ZA or the CB900FZ,but either way they jacked up the back end of the bike for better ground clearance as well as better adjustability. It was only a few years later that they became known as FVQ or 'Fades Very Quickly' - but I never had a problem with them.

The Jota bars were all well and good, but they weighed a ton with the adjustable bits in between. So I welded them up once I had ascertained the right angles, missing out the centre section that can be seen in some of the earlier pics.

This is a copy of the Honda sales catalogue that I still have of the CB750SS that was comissioned by Honda to Colin Seeley to modify the unsold stock of CB750F2s that were cluttering up a warehouse somewhere. The similarity between the PRR and the SS can easily be seen.

That front fairing is very 'Mad Max 1' stylee, but too much like a barn-door for my liking.

As I had decided that I did not want to use the CB125S any longer I bought another CB550F1.But soon afterwards the engine developed a knocking noise from the bottom end.So it came out for investigating and I used the 750/836.

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/Picture508-1.jpg~original

But the girlfriend did not mind. She preferred the 750/836 over her TS185.Something about liking something big between her legs Wink

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/Picture514-1.jpg~original

But soon it got too cold to ride anything but I kept on collecting parts for my 750

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/Picture506-1.jpg~original

I soon decided that I needed to sort out some top-end problems with the 750/836 and the modified frame came up trumps

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750030-1.jpg~original

So when I wanted to go to the Dutch TT in 1982 this coincided with the top-end rebuild. While this was being done I found the frame bracket for the Hondastyle fairing and bolted this up to the front frame downtubes.I was not totally happy with the frame mounting, using jubilee clips - yup - technical. The local kids watched from a safe distance, their knee caps in danger if they got too close.

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750032.jpg~original

But the new girlfriend decided that she liked to go everywhere fast.I nicknamed her Mad Max

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/Picture515-1.jpg~original

I liked the Hondastyle fairing, except for the previously mentioned reasons - the reduced legroom.I quite liked the look of the Dresda 900 endurance racer that I had photographed at Brands a while before and liked the 'engine-on-display' look

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/Picture281.jpg~original

So I cut down the 3/4 fairing to the top 2/3 bit and had it painted the same gloss black as the rest of the bike

Road test and pic time

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/Picture509-1.jpg~original

Then it was time for the Dutch TT 1982.

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750047.jpg~original

But did it rain or what. With open S&B filters they sucked in the water and made the bike run badly.Lesson learnt.

More to come
