I can't decide what is making me feel most nostalgic, your glasses, the style of the leather jackets/bike boots or the tent colours and shapes.

I think if you could put a picture up with blue or yellow plastic over trousers and bin liner wrapped luggage I'd be in heaven!

^^ I was thinking along those lines.... but not 'quite'"
https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/BikesBikesBikes2151.jpg
Had me thinking.... its the blanked off generator!
Common in those days; removing the flywheel reduced the flywheel inertial to bog all; and you could get away with it on a 'four', not needing the inertaia to keep the crank spinning between 'bangs'...
Also reduced the vulnarability they had of bending teh crank if you binned it!
https://i178.photobucket.com/albums/w269/teflons-torque/racer.jpg
This was taken about '94; it's my Uncle's 'racer', a CB5oo motor, in a chopped TZ-E mono-shock frame... Built in London, by some notable of the era for the '78 TT, F3 class (production based), when it would have been running on spoked rims, not the Dymags it has here, used as a museum piece! Bike didn't have a 'class' to run in by 1984, hence used as static display... but note the blanked genny!
My early road-riding was done, tow-starting that thing with an XT500, down the back-lanes for 'carburettor testing'!
It was running a 14:1 compression ratio with machined Kawasaki pistons, and a full Yoshi cam, 32mm Delorto's and total loss ignition.
Then towing it home again.... when the battery went flat!
Uncle still has it in the garage, and annoys the neighbours firing it up every couple of years or so, and treating them to the noise from a completely open pipe, and threatening that he's going to get it 'fettled' for 'Classic' classes for 'NEXT' season.... only trouble is, every time he has got it running, they have changed the eligibility! They dont like the mono-shock, the Dymags, the Del-Orto's, the De-Carbon 'Short' mono-shock conversion; the AP brakes.... but it DOES give hime hours of endless fun trying to search parts needed to 'convert' to a 'period' specification..... he has bought a set of Mikuni Carburettors for it, aparently.....
(Hopefully jetted for a four-stroke this time! Reason it was such a pig with the Dels was that they had come off a TZ700 Side-car engine!)
Have to have a hunt, see if I can find the pics of it at Mallory circa 1986, when he managed to blag an entry in the 500 four-stroke, swearing on the bible it WAS under 500cc, and getting me doing the maths to work out what the bore dimensions ought to be, for the book stroke length, and THEN stamping the dims on the sprocket cover! Circulated at a quite respectable minute a lap, but that wasn't 'quite' quick enough to make up the gap created at the start line, where a 'dead-engine-start was called for.....
He was surrounded by 500 singles....
I think he was expecting a jolt on a tow rope, and was surprised when every thing else started moving and he didn't!
He was 'almost' lapped and flagged before he managed to paddle it into life!

Over the Winter of 1982 I decided that I wanted to make more modifications to the 750/836.So I looked carefully at the frame and made up some small bracing bits that would strengthen without making too much differance in weight.A new cross piece above the upper rear engine mount and the front engine mount would stop some twisting. Then some small fillets between the 'V' by the swing-arm mount and the recently new frame rails above the engine frame rails at the front. For such small frame mods they did change the feel of the frame.

Here my brother waits to help with moving the bike around in my bedroom. It was so much easier working on the bike in there.

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750037-1.jpg~original

Once completed it completely changes the look of the bike.I also stripped the carbs and rear shocks to have them black stove enammelled, together with black nickel plated steel parts like the sidestand and a multitude of springs. I had found that after my prang on diesel the fork seals persistantly leaked,so I bought some forks from a CBX1000ZA which are the same 35mm diameter but slightly longer. The slight differance in fork spring rate was a bonus to balance out the stiffer springs on the uprated rear shocks.

It was about this time that I met someone new.Someone who enjoyed bikes as much as if not more so than I did.

Luckily this new girlfriend rode her own bike so was happy to play second fiddle to the way that I was involved with my bikes. We have now been married for 27 years.
I was lucky that in early 1983 I bought some Isle of Man Steam Packet tickets so that I could go to the TT races that year.In a road test of the Phil Read Replica (PRR) in a 'Bike' magazine the PRR had been photographed outside the Highlander pub on the TT course, which as some of you might know is along the Southern stretch of the course. So while we were there I made sure that I got a pic of my 750/836 in a similar position

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/Tims750.jpg~original

And a few other pics of the 750/836 sitting in the garage waiting for the next rideout, with the girlfriend's CB125TDC sitting in the corner.

More soon.

I also wanted more black paint. So the wheels and exhaust got the full treatment.

Showed this to my old man and its got him wondering what would have happened if he kept his CB750F1 back in 1977 he admits its was a brilliant machine but the weight and getting the carbs right was a pain I'll have to rumage for some old pics if he's got some (he didn't record much on camera from his younger years unfortunately)

He also had another CB750 later on it was bored out to 903cc apparently, was there two bore kits available Question

Oh and......

You didn't mention about your nickname......Black & Decker...due to the amount of holes you drilled in the poor bike...spesh cylinder head!!
Looking forward to seeing the next installment.
And why not show the bike next to the GS1000S at back of flat....you know.....the faster bike.LOL.

It was about the Winter of 1983/1984 that I decided to go minimalist.Everything got the treatment.Lightweight nuts and bolts were drilled then reanodised/alichromed.The rear disc was swapped for a worn out original and the machined on a lathe to be operated by a caliper from a Honda MB50.This disc was then drilled and grooved around the outside circumferance way before Mr.Honda did the same on the RC30.CB900FC discs and calipers were mated up to the CBX1000ZA forks, the discs being drilled and grooved in the same way as the rear.A hollow rear wheel spindle from a CB900FZ was matched up and found to be a lot lighter.Engine mount plates were made of dural and anodised/alichromed.Andrews Performance coils were fitted.A CB125TDC left hand switchgear was modified so that the 'PASS' switch became the starter button and the indicator switch became the headlight on/off switch, both easily done.I then fitted a quick-action throttle from a Honda XL250SA so that I could do away with the right-hand switchgear.

Anyway.More pics.

I was in contact with 'Superbike' magazine in the Summer of 1985 when they wanted to run an article about Honda 750 SOHC bikes. They sent a photographer and a journalist along, who wanted to ride the 836.But I do not let just anyone ride my bikes. It has to be someone that I trust implicitly - and someone from a magazine is not to be trusted.

These are some of the pics that they took

I have to ask.... did you carry that bit of wood you put under the stand EVERYWHERE?
With all this metal fab going on, did you not think to extend the kick-stand?
(Actually; scrub that thought; been meaning to weld 2" on the bottom of my CB750's side stand for the last four years!)

It was about 1988 that I hit some diesel and came a cropper. The main damage was to the fairing, which was written off and too badly broken to be repaired.Shame,as it had done me well over the years.
So I looked about for another to replace the old Rickman/Hondastyle item.I liked the style of the CB1100RC/D fairing and found a black one at a reasonable price. This was basically two piece, with the bottom section being a bit of a PITA to fit

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/BikesBikesBikes294.jpg~original

Then, over the Winter of 1989 I had the engine apart and had the crank out.Chris Applebee in Essex polished, balanced and lightened the crank and con-rods.I had removed the rotor and machined off about one pound of material, which made quite a difference in the acceleration of the revs.It was a bit of a play-off between bottom end grunt and engine response, but it worked out nicely. The pistons had new rings after bust glazing the bores, the primary drive chains were replaced and the S&W valve springs were shimmed. The heavy duty cam chain that I had replaced years ago still had plenty of life in it.The gears were also undercut and the heavy duty clutch springs were shimmed to go with the new friction plates.I had made and installed some aluminium/bronze valve guides previously and so the special 6.6mm reamer that I had had made up especially for the job was used to just check for any misalignment. The cylinder head studs had been installed previously and the exhaust studs had been removed to be replaced with stainless Allen bolts into helicoiled holes.

I also decided to go with bigger tyres. My brother had (still has) a GSXR1100H with some wide wheels. So I asked the bod at CMA Wheels up in Mildenhall in East Anglia to make me some specials,as in a 3.00x18" front and a 4.25x18" rear so that I could run a 110/80x18 ME33 CompK front and a 160/70x18 ME1 CompK rear, which were the hot tyres to have at the time. This meant using up what I had at the time in preparation for the new wheels and tyres

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/BikesBikesBikes182.jpg~original

Then in 1990 my brother and I went to the Isle of Man TT races, where we had some fun despite the weather, which was wet much of the time. But we got some pictures on Mad Sunday

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750053.jpg~original

Coming away from Guthries. We arranged it so that once my brother had taken a picture, then I would ride ahead for a mile or two over the Mountain section, then stop to take a piccy of him as he sped by.This worked nicely until I did not see him by the side of the road

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750054.jpg~original

I eventually realised that I must have gone too far and so stopped at the Bungalow. My bother then stopped at Windy Corner

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750055.jpg~original

He then jumped ahead and stopped at the Creg (Creg-ny-Baa) and took one of me as I approached and as I went by

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750056.jpg~original
https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750088.jpg~original

The last pic of the series at the TT was as I rounded Signpost

https://i666.photobucket.com/albums/vv23/WiNot_Rhencullen/Honda%20750/My750057.jpg~original

After the TT I decided that I did not like the Acrybe fairing so sold that and bought a twin headlight fairing. This was a good move as it had twin Cibie H4 headlights. This was far superior to the single headlight Cibie 'Z' beam that I had before as it turned out to be dangerous for me.While out for a ride one evening with my brother the headlight bulb blew. And not just one filament.Both.At the same time.Down a dark rural road. Not good.

Anyway,the fairing was fitted.

At this time my wife was quite happy to ride her CB550F2 and so I had the spare seat base fitted with a single seat by P&P Seating in Birmingham.
The final instalment soon.

I think you have had a fair few people on tenterhooks waiting to find out how it went from a shiny shiny bike to a pile of scrap Laughing

So.The final part. This is the most difficult part to write about.

On the morning of my near fatal accident back in 1992 I had mentioned to my wife about how I wanted to pension off my 750/836 and to buy myself something bigger. But the bike must have heard.

I had a new job that I was about to start and so had a week off in between. So,to celebrate,I had arranged to meet some friends at a pub down near Brands Hatch. At the end of the evening I turned to go down a road that I had traversed many times before on my way home. The road twists and turns and normally you can see a car approaching from a fair distance away. But on this particular night,a car was being driven by a person who was convinced that they could see in the dark - and so was driving along an unlit dark country road - on sidelights.
I in the meantime, was enjoying twin headlights on high beam. But I could not see this car on a blind left hander - until it appeared out of nowhere - right in front of me.I had no time to brake and hit the offside headlight.Luckily I was thrown over the handlebars into the small gap between the car and the bank on my side of the road. How I survived with a few scratches I do not know. But the bike was another story. The bike had rebounded off the car and with an almost full tank of unleaded it burst into flames.Because of the amount of aluminium and plastic on the bike there was nothing that I could do to save it.I will let the pictures speak for themselves.

Luckily the bike was covered by a classic policy as it was over 15 years and was on agreed value.I got the insurance payout quite quickly as the nonce in the car had admitted to driving on sidelights at the time of the accident - in front of one of the attending plod people. With this money I bought the Exup1000 which I still have.

But that is another story.
