Has anybody replaced their standard GU10 halogen bulbs with a LED version? and also is there anywhere cheap to buy the LED bulbs? I'm really after a 40w equivalent (in terms of how much light they give out) in a LED lamp. Mains voltage btw.

i tried about 12 months ago with some from screwfix. they were about £10 a pop at the time iirc.

my advice - unless they have had any major advances in the last 12 months DO NOT BOTHER.

i got less light out of a 4 lamp fitting, than i could get by turning on the screen of my mobile Rolling Eyes

took them back.

i hear reasonable things about the newer ones, but the light can be quite harsh and clinical IMHO

Yeah use them in the kitchen, run 6 as the main lights.

Just replaced them (3 of the 6 lost a segment) but got the wrong colour (apparently day white isnt what I was after as they are more of a blue light).

They burn a hell of a lot less electrickery, and easily bright enough, tho when we tried just 3 in the mother in laws found them a bit dull.

Bought the last lot here : https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/130520470787

Using the 78 LED ones, but i would def say warm white not the day white.

I use them all over the place for indirect lighting and i've seen quite a few pubs use LED GU10's too.

My desk lamp is a Warm White Osram Parathom 5W (B&Q). The spread of light can be more focused than traditional lamps but they're not too bad if you get ones with the prismatic glass, not the clear version. You do need to shop round though as there's lots of cheap nasty LED ones which can be dim.

I also use GE 4W LED R50 bulbs and also the Lidl Livarno bulbs are quite good for £2.99 but these are only E27 screw cap but they are a nice colour temperature.

I've got one like this on a desk lamp - Link

Perfect for a desk, but the GF wouldn't let me use it in the bathroom as she didn't like the light.

The ones linked in ebay above are cheap for a reason.... Get ones with a few decent led units, rather than loads of rubbish leds...

I have 4 GU10 lights in our kitchen and bought a pack of 4 3W LED lights (3x1W LEDs) from Fleabay (£15) about a year and half ago.

One of the 4 failed within the week so I replaced one of the CFLs.

The LEDs are more focused than the CFL, gives a similar light output over the area where the beam lands to the CFL, but it is nowhere near a halogen bulb.

The CFL failed recently so I bought another 4 pack from Fleabay (£10) to ensure I get the same colour in the room. Within the first week another one failed and they are a daylight white as opposed to the first set, which I thought were daylight but appear to be warm white in comparison.

Verdict: for accent lighting they work well. I've got 4 covering my worktops which works reasonably well over the limited area, but CFLs have a wider beam spread. If you want to replace halogens,
CFLs have a comparible beam spread, but lower light output.

Cheers for the response guys! From the sounds of it there's nothing low energy that can offer same light output as a 40w halogen. The fella who wants the work done is fed up of replacing transformers and lamps so I suggested mains voltage LEDs as a possible alternative but wasn't exactly sure what was out there Thumbs Up Wink

I've got LEDs in on my corner uplighters which are good for accenting specific areas. I originally opted for 6000K temperature because I want something to offset the off-white wall paint.

In terms of overall luminosity, the equivalent 40W CFL wins hands down because of the spread of light it offers. For spotlights, LED's are good - I use them on my desk lamp which is suspended over my aquarium (only a 25L jobbie) but it only draws 3 watts. Considering that I've never been a fan of direct lighting, the LED's offer a good alternative.

To save complication, I basically replaced all my Edison Screw CFLs with 3W SMD LED bulbs.
