Hi I'm having trouble getting one of the upper shock mounting bolts off on my etz250. It turns freely so doesn't appear in any way seized, but that's the problem it just turns and you can't screw it out nor tighten it!

I'm presuming the thread on the bolt is buggered (hopefully not the frame) but as it is I don't see how to get it out.

Its basically fixed in position, what to do?

I've got some Koni shocks which I've managed to fit on the other side but obviously having the same on both sides would be preferable!

If the thread has stripped, or cross threaded so the bolt turns but doesn't unscrew, its often the thread deformation is holding it in like its in a ring, instead of a helix.

You need to make offerings to the gods of metal & pry, yes, pry.

As in, get something under the head, like a knackered flathead screwdriver, and pry it out like a nail with a claw-hammer...

But gently.

I find, if you can turn and pry at the same time, you can sometimes get the bolt to 'bear' on some better threads at some point and start to wind out...

But go carefully; once it starts to grip, you dont want it to shear, and you are likely to be deforming damaged threads.

Once 'out', inspect screw which is probably fucked, but threads in hole likely to be also.

DON'T try screwing another bolt straight in; run down it with a tap to clean the threads first, and see what threads you got.

If tap is loose, you may have to drill out and re-tap over size; or helicoil/plug & re-tap.

hi dude checked in owners manual, not much good on this buit suspect top shock mounting is captive bolt welded to frame with wasjher and nut to hold on shock?? does top eye have metal collar or distance peice??

bottom eye has bolt with captive nut or plate on s/arm, ( haynes manual shows ) does bottom eye have collar or distance peice??

which bolt cant you get out?? bottom one?? if eyes have distance peice could bolt be corroded in and mearly turning on rubber bush??

if sdo then pull and turn method may work but if badly corroded in then punch out?? or final resort cut bolt eitherside of shock, you have bits in front of you so can tell better than me with keyboard in front of me. how do you like this bike, i liked mz ( research thier history and racing pedigree ( deffection to suzi with all the secrets )

Thanks I'll give that a try. Unusual really as MZ's are usually pretty good for this sort of thing, have certainly never experienced this before.
