How long do you have after cancelling insurance to declare the bike as SORN?

My insurance ends soon but the bike is due to be sold in about a week hopefully so I don't really want to SORN it. The bike will be off the road

As soon as your ins stop. Sorn it....

Can be done online in mins.

Once its sold SORN has to be redone by the new owner anyway.

Clearly you are not going to ride it with no ins, so why take the risk on sorn.

Because it's pretty much Sold pending collection and if it is Sorn the buyer will moan about it not having tax.

If have no choice then I guess I have no choice Rolling Eyes

Workmate has been uninsured and not SORNED for 6+ weeks and has yet to receive even the first warning letter. I wouldn't sweat it.

If it still has tax there is no need to SORN it. lack of insurance does not void the tax.

No but a taxed bike needs Ins... Which the Op says will be cancelled or ended soon. Karma

You need insurance to tax a bike, but once it is taxed it stays taxed regardless of any change in insurance.

Its a stupid law.

I had my bike Taxed but not insured for about 2months without having any bother.

Apparently they do give 1 month though.

Yes, true, but it's an offence to do so.

No, it makes no sense.

From Directgov Website :

"The change in the law means, you will only be able to take your vehicle off the road and cancel your insurance by returning your tax disc to DVLA.

It must be returned on a V14 (application form for a refund of a tax disc) and SORN declared at the same time."

And:

"If you have a vehicle that is still taxed but not insured, you could face a penalty. This includes vintage and classic cars, motorbikes and motor homes – all vehicles that people sometimes leave uninsured for part of the year. If this applies to you, you need to return the tax disc on a V14 (including nil value discs) and declare SORN at the same time."

Stupid, stupid DVLA.

Sorry Mr Rogerborg, i just realized that this is from the page you linked to. Please read this as a +1 to your post. Smile

I recently had the same problem with my car. My insurance company would not let me carry my no claims bonus over from my old car to my new one until the car was either sold or sornd because of the new laws.

Hah, I'd missed that bit.

Well, I have in my possession:

A V956 letter confirming that I have made a SORN for vehicle LK58 ***, valid until 30/09/12. I did not send a V14 or return the tax disc. The V956 says "If you applied for a refund of vehicle tax, we will send this to you separately."

A month later, I received a V11 reminder for vehicle LK58 *** asserting that my current tax disc or SORN runs out on 30 November 2011. (which is indeed when the tax disc runs out).

I await their next move with interest. I assume it will be stepping in a bucket or something hilarious involving a ladder or plank.
