Go here, put in your postcode and choose 'motorcycle'. Not good round my way - there's been 17 killed in accidents on my current commute in the last 11 years.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-15975720

On a side note, in my area there's been 11 pedestrians killed, ony 3 were listed as below 60yrs age.

I sturggled to find a dead motorcyclist below 30 years old though, and not many below 40...Looks like statistically speaking I have at least another 9 years in me Laughing

That is morbidly fascinating... it does bring it home to see them all on one page though.

1 killed on my commute, 15 killed since 1999 in Northampton. Not too shabby.

Really don't understand the fascination with bike accidents, it's like the random RIP posts - does it make people feel like they're living on the edge when they read about a death or see a statistic?

People die every second in all sorts of ways. If you don't know them personally then accept it, respect it and move on.

Not trying to troll or bitch about the link, it just reminded me of the fact I'm genuinely baffled by some of the attitudes I see on forums Thinking

Not 100% accurate tho as I know of 2 motorcyclists that died which are not shown on the map.
Not much around my way, altho it shows Eastern road, which is pretty much known as a death trap here.

Near me it says that there was an accident on the M74 between 3 cars and 1 good vehicle which killed a pedestrian Confused .

Why the fuck was there a pedestrian on the motorway? Shocked

Anyway on the subject of bikes, not many too near me (3 on the map) which is scaled out quite some distance.

Quite the opposite. You hear all the time how dangerous it is to ride, or to be on the road, or how easy it is for something to come end your life in an instant. We're all aware, but I don't think we really are aware. Things like this put it into perspective. It's quite eye-opening to see the incidents - bike... heavy goods lorry, bike... car, and to see their age? Kids... middle aged men... even the most experienced are not safe.

There is no fascination - just a very real realisation that you're not always in control of things, and being on the road is a real danger. The details are scarce, but to see how many people do die, and so close to home too, should at least hit you enough to take a little more care in how you conduct yourself.

I don't think so - whenever I see a sign that reads "33 incidents in the last 3 years" (especially when the sign hasn't been updated in at least 5) I don't think "ooo, I better be careful", I think "not bad, only one a month on average". Given the volume of traffic on our roads, it's an acceptable amount, IMHO.

You say 17 in 11 years is not good...yeah true, any death is bad, but looking at your location I would say you live in an area where there are many motorcycle journeys made per day. Probably hundreds of thousands in that time period. Pretty good odds if you ask me....erm which you probably didn't Smile
EDIT: I should have read all the messages in this thread...I agree with what Shaggy said Thumbs Up

Scary stuff - 90% of accidents involving a motorcycle around here were involving 16 - 20 year olds... even 1 15 year old rider died too... A lot on my weekley country road ride too, I think I will slow it down a bit.

For motorcyclists on my route there is 6 deaths all below 30, three of them are below 20.

Total deaths on my route out of all of them is 12, in the next city there is at least 30 around the center.

However not all deaths are listed down on this site, typical bbc neighbors son was killed on a put put running from police earlier in the year, police car caught the back end and they took the tumble.

Passenger had a crushed back, the driver (neighbours son) went straight under a truck no protection, old motocross helmet.

Oh an ma old man is on there the route Ive got to take when I go for my mod1.

When I see those signs I tend to think "ooo, I bet this is a fun and twisty bit of road". And usually it is. Smile

Human nature I guess. Distasteful it may be, but most folk find it oddly compelling. I can’t explain why, but grim stuff through history has always commanded a big crowd. Public executions, modern day rubberneckers etc.

Motorcycling pyramid of injuries reads 1 death for 11 major injuries and 48 accidents, so on my route statistically that means 816 accidents in 11 years - 6 a month.

The only way to avoid death is not to be born. I just try and have some fun before the inevitable happens. I'd rather die biking than in a care home.

The ones closest to me; about 3 of them, none of which are closer than about 4-5 miles away are all:

Bike rider aged 40-50 kills pedestrian and injures himself.

2 wheels > 2 legs in these parts Crying or Very sad

On a more positive note, the bike accident I witnessed a few years ago isn't listed so presumably the guy lived Thumbs Up .

That website really hits home exactly how dangerous walking is. Yet there's no "ban pedestrians" campaign is there? No EU legislation to make pedestrians all wear appropriate footwear and body armour. To be honest, if the ignorant and blinkered attitude of most people I encounter on a day to day basis is transferred to the time that they're crossing the road, there's no wonder they're getting mashed all over. It's inevitable considering their attitude to looking, seeing or acknowledging others. They're only marginally ahead of cagers in the general idiocy stakes. I'm aware of the differences in numbers between cars and bikes on the road, but the numbers of car accidents still far outweighs bikes, but there's far less emphasis on car driver education. Still feels like the finger's pointed at the two wheeled road used far too easily. It's all our fault for riding a bike, but not blame's apportioned to idiotic smidsy causers.

I'm going to stop now, I'm starting to feel my blood bubbling...
