Against mandatory Hi-Viz e petition:

Sign it Thumbs Up

Following confirmation that hi-viz is to become compulsory in France from 2013 and Ireland from 2014, MAG member Jon Wilmer (Regional Rep for Thames Valley) has launched a petition calling on the British Government to put pressure on the European Commission to discipline any member state that imposes clothing standards such as hi-viz on motorcycle riders.

Signed.

I'm all for wearing hi-viz but I do not like the idea that one day I could be knocked off my bike and the police fine me for not wearing hi-viz and my insurance company refuse to pay out because it was my fault for not being visible enough.

And how come this law doesn't require all vehicles to have reflective stripes so they can be seen in the dark in the event of a crash - or breakdown?

What, you mean like the law requiring all vehicles to have retroreflectors on the back of them?

Or the one in the same countries mentioned here that means you have to carry a triangle and a hi-vis round in case you break down?

Honestly the new antitamper regs are a far better place for MAG to spend energy than campaigning against laws in another country that may or may not be imposed here at some point in the future.

Ehhhh.

Signed, but only because he used "naïve". Thumbs Up

If you do go to France, be sure to stick "AGINCOURT 1415" on the back of your leathers in reflective tape.

A warning triangle isn't visible from all directions so if a car were to break down in the middle of the road it should have reflective stripes all the way around.
You know it makes sense. Idea Police Idea Liar

A hi-vis jacket has no impact on the visibility (or lack thereof) of the bike either /pedant.

It would not be the end of the world provided something like the following would do the job, instead of those stupid things they make you wear on your CBT.

Nope, sorry. Le Frogs are mandating 150cm^2 of reflective material, so think a Sam Browne belt or a couple of 2" armbands. This despite the vast majority of bike accidents happening during the day.

The Paddies are independently moving towards mandating sleeved hi-vis, which that jacket (or my RST Enduro) might satisfy, depending on which way they go.

Thinking

I can think of a pattern that might suit. It might be a bit specialist ("you want a reflective what? Max Mosley, you say?"), and you'd have to take it off when you hit the autobahn, but nevertheless...

That petition sums up my exact thoughts on the matter. Same could be said with a lot of SMIDSYs; I bet you would have seen me if I posed a danger to you.

I did write a whole other part of this post.. but it was too opinionated. Anyway, signed it.

Totally agree with this it is one of the main reasons why car drivers hate motorcyclists as well. Not just because of it being dangerous but for the reason if they hit another car they won't affect the driver that much. Hit a biker and it is another thing, hence why the hate motorcyclists because they can't drive dangerously all the time without a care in the world.

Anyway signed lot of good it will do, need 100,000 signatures for it to be heard. Need to get it pushed out a bit more..only another 97k to go.

I've argued it previously in another thread and I'll reiterate it here: our most effective protest is 'civil disobedience' en mass.

Until then, it is enough for 'evil' to prevail when the good remain silent.

Because I pester the pants off my MP (who must hate me now).

I go to MAG ride outs and support MAG lobbying.

I was aware of this via MAG newsletters a long time ago so have been involved with more selective action to dissuade those Europratts from Tamperfering with things they refuse to understand.

And I don't think anyone give a shit about e-titions anyway.
Write a short note to your MP it WILL receive personal attention. I promise you.

MEP, surely? The DfT under Mike Penning won't introduce anything similar without Brussels mandating it.

These petitions are only any good if they can reach 100,000, below that and there's no reason for them to be noticed. I've not seen any bike-related ones get anywhere close to that many.

There aren't even 100,000 'proper' bikers anyway. There's only the 50,000 members at bcf and that's about it. Not counting the ones who have double identities. (Yous know who you are...)
