Hi, this is my first post on here, although I've been reading here a lot for the last couple of months. I've passed my CBT at the start of November and I've been learning on my CG 125 since. I've seen that quite a lot of you used too or still have CG's so I thought this would be a good place to ask.

My CG is a 2001 reg but I was told it was the 2002 model when I bought it. It is the version with both kickstart and electric start. Checking wikipedia it shows that mine is the M model.

When I checked the condition of the chain my dad recommended replacing the chain and sprocket. When looking online it stated the stock size sprocket is 43 teeth however when counting the teeth on existing rear sprocket is has 36 teeth.

Checking JT sprockets website it does state that the W model is the 2001 model which does have the 36 teeth rear sprocket but the model history of wikipedia shows that the W model is 1998-2000

So now I'm unsure which version of the CG I've got and if the existing size sprockets are correct or not?

Thanks

It's been downgeared for wheelies by the previous owner, definitely this.

Also, why are your clocks on the floor?

Thanks for the reply, I've gone ahead and bought the correct sprocket and chain set of ebay. It was £35 for a D.I.D chain and JT sprockets including postage so I'm happy to replace them at that price.

It looks like like the chain's not been looked at for a while, the chain gaurd was caked in muddy like oil 2cm thick all the way round and the front sprocket cover was just as bad. The chain was dry to touch and had barely any oil on it.

Front sprocket cover:

The front sprocket also makes a clicking sound when spinning and I can move both sprockets sideways slightly, I'm hoping this is just the sprockets and nothing else?

I've finally got round to fitting the chain and sprocket and realised I've made a massive mistake.

The original sprocket was the correct size and even though there is a massive difference between the size of the new one, I still went ahead to at least try it out.

The gearing is completely wrong now:

1: 0-9
2: 10-19
3: 20-29
4: 30-39:
5: 40-50

My top speed is now 50 and I have to make 4 gear changes to get to 30... although it is a lot faster at getting there.

So that was a waste of £35 which I now have to spend again on a new set.

If anyone is interested in a sprocket set only used once for cheap then PM me (Front: 14, Back: 43 DID Chain/JT Sprockets)

If only id seen your thread sooner. The CG like many small Honda's has a pretty small rear sprocket. The 36T sounds about right to me, it's certainely not 43T, thats more like a trail bike size rear sprocket.

The main reason I thought I had the wrong size was that when changing to 5th gear at around 55 the speed would just start to drop but when I did change my sprockets today the front was a 16/36 which I guess should explain. But after a bit more research it does sound like most CG's don't have the best ratio for 5th gear.

I'm getting way to confused with all these conflicting sprocket sizes depending on the website I look at.

Thanks for the tip though, I don't know why I didn't think of just getting new sprockets instead of a kit, JT sprockets are quite cheap on amazon so this isn't to much of a problem. I will just need to shorten my chain by a few links.

I'm curious as to why there is a big sudden difference of sprocket sizes between different models. I assume my bike is the W model now which is exactly the same spec and look wise as the M/1 model but has the 14/36 sprockets :S

Damn you, Online, why do you lie to us? Mad

Sorry, I missed this too. I'd like to believe that I'd have pointed out that if you were happy with the gearing, don't change it.

The good news is that you just need a smaller rear: the chain will be too long, but you can just knock few links out.

Well I no longer trust "Online" anymore Razz so I'm going to wait for a few confirmation before buying anything.

Using https://www.sprocketcalculator.com/ 14/34 is nearly the same ratio as 15/36.

If I buy a 34 rear sprocket will my gearing be the same as stock?

Thanks for the reply's Thumbs Up

EDIT: Ignore that, I may as well replace replace the front sprocket as well with the right size for the extra £3 it will cost.

I'm going to order the 15/36 sprockets for £15 posted so atleast it's not to much of an expensive learning curve Rolling Eyes
