Hi folks,

Ive just sorted out my lessons + test and Ill hopefully have them done soon.

Im not old enough to do DAS so I need to buy a 33bhp'er...

Im thinking about a CBR250 or something similar, rather than an NSR, because:

1) I dont understand two-strokes as well as four-strokes
2) I want quite a big bike, being 6'3"
3) I know this sounds egotistical but Im not keen on high pitched two-strokes
4) I figure a derestricted CBR250 will be fun for the next year or so

Just wondering whether this is a mistake and if not, is a CBR250 a good choice, any alternative 4-stroke 250's?

How does a CBR250 (or similar bikes) perform?

Did you actually listen to the CBR250 video?

It's the screamiest road bike you can get, 19,500 rpm redline. Cool

If you're buying a 33bhp-er, why the 250 fixation? Why not a 400, 500, 600? They're all restrictable.

Bear in mind that a CBR250 is over 33bhp, so you would need restrictors for it the same as you would need them for any other bike, if you are going to restrict it.

Also, from what I hear, parts for CBR250's are as rare as rocking horse sh1t. Smile

CBR250's are pretty small aren't they?

And in my opinion 2-strokes are alot more simple than 4-strokes Smile

I figured a CBR400 being heavier will be really slugish when choked to 33bhp?

Im aware a CBR250 would need a restriction (on paper:twisted: )

Id like to get into four strokes ASAP cus my interest is largely mechanical. I know the CBR250 will scream at high revs but Id still prefer that to a twstroke I think - then again im a newbie, so maybe Im wrong.

More simple?

The way the actual engine works, maybe, but a 4 stroke is much easier to operate. No 2-stroke oil, and no frequent rebuilds.

Also you say that you want a big bike, well you don't want a CBR 250. They are tiny. I feel I should be talking in a very high pitched voice when talking about it!

How about a niice ZXR400? they are a reasonable size and easy to get parts for. and they are very sporty.

Personally for your requirements I would say ZXR400 all the way.

Perhaps even one of the slightly less sporty 600's! Hornet, Bandit Fazer etc...

Is it not unreasonable to restrict a 400 or 600 to 33bhp?

Also, whats the crack with slyly not-quite-restricting a bike when you only have a 33bhp liscense?

You can do it if you want - many people on this forum have.

Although when riding it you are riding without insurance and effectivaly without a licence.

It's perfectly feasible to restrict a 4 or a 6, in fact they make take to it better than a smaller bike.

Most people on here will have had a bigger bike restricted at one point or another and could tell you how well it ran.

My old VFR400 ran fine, very smoothly with quite a lot of grunt (for a restricted bike). In fact, for a time it ran worse without the restrictors because the carbs needed balancing.

Personally if you are going to be 'sly' as you put it I would say pay for the restriction and then let the restrictors 'fall' out. That way you'll still have the restriction certificate if the police get nosey.

Although you are still effectively riding without a license or insurance. It is a decision that must be entirely up to you because its no use being pressured into doing something illegal.

I would say, buy a bike that you like (not too sporty - a sports 400 or an all round 600) get it restricted and be happy until your restriction period runs out.

Thumbs Up Smile
