I've got broadband with NTl and it's supposed to be 600 kb/s. I don't think I'm actually getting anywhere near this. For instance when I download an attachment from this site, it usually downloads at about 13 - 15 kb/s and I think it should be more like 60.

What kind of download speeds is everyone else getting on broadband?

Cheers Thumbs Up

Conning bastards Evil or Very Mad

I've got an engineer coming out on Friday. Besides the fact it's an apparently slow connection. It's only working intermittently at the moment. Sad

I'll chin the engineer about the slow speed as well. He's not getting out the house alive till it's fixed Evil or Very Mad

Blugh, cable internet.

Your bandwidth is shared between your street or neighbourhood, usually this causes the horrid slow speeds.

Try it at 4am, if you don't hit 40+kb, give Mister NTL Engineer a kick in the face Razz

My 512kb BTOpenworld DSL gives me 60kb tops downloading, 600kb cap on cable won't be much more... unless you feel criminal and uncap it...

The advertised speed of any connection is always impossible to actually achieve, it only means that in 'perfect' conditions, that is the speed you would be capable of download\upload at (on a LAN, for example).

Download speeds of 30-60Kbps are the norm.

BUT REMEMBER THE BIGGEST FACTOR WILL BE THE SERVER\LOCATION YOU ARE DOWNLOADING FROM!!!

For example, a large company with a s***hot server in the next town and a fast connection will give faster downloads than a guy hosting a site from his own machine in Singapore.

It does not matter 2 hoots what speed you can download at if the server you are downloading from can only upload to you at 10Kbps!!!

If your download speed is higher than the server's upload speed, then you will download at the max upload speed of the server.

If your speed is slower than the server, you will download at your max download speed.

Geddit?

Also, bare in mind that there are millions of outside factors in play when download across the Internet (firewall software etc.)

Hope this helps
Mark

I've got NTL 1mbit.

It's pretty crappy indeed. When it works, it works nicely, and speeds are around 120kB/s.

However- this is NTL we are talking about, so to be completely honest it doesn't work very often really.

Everybody is always bitching on about ntl but I have never had a problem with it.

maybe i'm just lucky or maybe I haven't had it long enough.

I'm on Virgin (no contract) which gives me an actual connection speed of 576/288.
I get average download speeds of 58-62 but it has remained constant at 72 a few times. I ca upload at 28-32 which seems a bit high but I'm not complaining! My firewall gives me this data so it's not windows being weird and giving inaccurate figures.

Bulldog is good - £25 for 512 on peak, 1Mb off peak. Another fiver and you can double that off peak speed. Very Happy
Only reason I'm not with them is because I don't know how long I'll be living where I am. Sad

Everybody bitches about NTL cos they think they're good doing what everyone else says joining in. Everyone I know in my area who has NTL NEVER had a problem with broadband by the sounds of it they may have you switched on for the 150K service although the downloads are a little slow even for that.

I had 600K got 85, then I got 1MB and had around 125kb/s. With cable you don't have a contention ratio like BT so it should be better. We are currently on Bulldog dsl 2MB and it's fine, only the usual BT installation problems.

Just ring them up and get them to fix it. Plus you know that your download speed isnt always max it depends on the server you download from? I assume this is from more than one server?

I pay £25 a month unlimited access, £17 set up fee. I was on Freeserve dial-up and was paying £16 so I don't think it is that bad.

Bit shit about not getting paid though, big companies think they can do what they like.

Nah - everyone bitches at NTL cos they are shite. Its a wel known fact. Just like everyone knows that the sun will rise in the morning.

Umm. Cable contention ratios are generally higher than ADSL, so unless you are lucky in that not many people in your area are on it you will get screwed at busy times.

No that's correct, just divide the upload/download speed by 8 and you will get the highest speed attainable with that connection Smile

I have BT openworld 512k, it actually connects at about 480k, I get about 56k - 58k download speed on most servers. Alot of people bitch about it, but for me it has been really good, most of the time when it's down it is due to my smoothwall server breaking Laughing

I know other people with NTL and it is so unreliable Thumbs Down

Well as there's "No" contention ration on NTL because they use fibre lines which can hold alot more than copper Razz

Well ADSL only works on copper lines, so meh Razz

Where I used to live which was near as dammit 3 miles away from the NTL exchange it was a fibre line (I was told all the way to the street then copper) either way I've had both and NTL wins each time. so MEH Razz
