I have a point and shoot a Fuji F 410 and I need a change as the photos are not of good quality as the camara is now old..

What would I get for 200 quid or under but I dont want one like I had but an upgrade if you get my drift.

I've been looking online for a new camera for my Dad, so far were looking at the Nikon Coolpix L120. Seems like the best <£200 camera we've found. Ive no experience with it tho, just going by reviews.
Let me know if you find something better.

Thats where I'm looking plus asking around but a slightly bigger camera will be alright..
If I get anything interesting I will post..

Cheers..

Went and had a look yesterday and saw a Fujifilm 029050, it had a good write up but was poorly made I thought..

Its hard in Spain to do this but I'm coming to the UK the first week in Oct so I'll have a better look then.

Not going to do much better than this in that price range...seriously good piece of kit....I use it for on the run commercial photography when I either don't have my DSLR with me or don't have time to set it up/change lens etc. AND you can buy it in Tescos:

I've always preferred Canons, for one in my pocket even on the bike at the moment I have the SX200 - it was about £150 new last year but you could get a refurbished one from Canon outlet for under £100.
I have no problem at all buying a refurb from there.

The Fuji above is good but the bulkier style is a dis-incentive to taking it on your bike.

Yeah if you dont want to go down the SLR route get a Canon Ixus, very good, small etc...

Went touring with a borrowed Ixus stuffed inside tankbag/inside jacket pocket, brillian to stop, quickly pull out, fast response times etc.

Can someone give me a quick run down on the differences between SLR and point and shoot?

And exactly what a SLR is.

My camera is also getting old and in need of replacement, was going to make a thread similar to this around new years time for when I'm going to need it.

Thumbs Up Karma

A point and shoot is a small compact camera - thin body so limited optical zoom range, smallest sensors, lowest quality images, but best ones do a great job of taking your 'average' pic. Can be taken anywhere so best chance of getting a pic on the hop.

An SLR, or Single Lens Reflex camera is a camera (usually with interchangeable lenses) that you are looking at the actual image that will be captured through the lens. A mirror that allows you to do this, then flips out of the way when the picture is taken - biggest sensor sizes and therefore, highest resolution for your mega pixels = best picture quality but big, heavy and a pain when you want to take a quick pic.

A bridge camera, (like the Fuji I posted earlier) no mirror, you are looking at a screen image like n a compacy but much higher quality image due to much larger optical zoom. Lenses are not interchangeable but hyper zoom range means this is not really a problem. Compromise between the previous two.

L120 still beats the sx200 and s4000 in reviews altho the sx200 does have alot quicker shutter speed.
And we already have a ixus point and shoot.

Yeah I've noticed that as my cameras get older their picture quality declines. The first camera I got in 2002 started shooting in black and white in around 2005, then a few years later it got even worse when all it would take were copper engravings. Once it started doing crayon rubbings I had to throw it away.

The big thing with DSLRs is the speed. Beyond that it's the incredible results you can get from fast lenses.

Of all the bridges and compacts I've handled via work, the only two that have genuinely impressed me were a Lumix FZ30 and a Pen PL1, everything else I've toyed with has either been too slow, suffered too much in sub optimal light or more often than not, both of the above. The Fujitsu bridges are pretty top notch when it comes to value and can put out rock solid photos, I just wish they were a a bit quicker.

When SLRs are good they can be very good, but you need to know what you're doing.
Unless you're already familiar with photoshop-style processing it can get quite frustrating.

This is from my 5D this afternoon, at full size the detail is astonishing.

.......you wouldn't buy a bike based purely on the reviews, don't buy a camera. Get your hands on one and have a play. I would also assume that in terms of picture quality there is not much to choose between them...it will come down to feel, ease of use and features you want rather than features provided.

Got to agree that is a good photo.. but being new to something more than a basic camara , I need all the help I can get.
I have just been tickering with photo bucket with not too bad results.

Im looking to buy a new camera for the Mrs as she wants a compact point and shoot, my hybrid camera is too big and complicated she says lol.

So... panasonic Lumix FS35 it is Smile Leica lens, 16mp, takes SD cards, large optical zoom, accessories are cheap!

Its £112.90 at pixmania, spare batteries are £5 on ebay, a panasonic lumix branded camera case is £4.80 on ebay, and a 16GB SDHC card is £12.50 on 7dayshop.

reviews are always very good for Lumix stuff due to the lens thats on these camera's.

£135 gets you all of the above Smile jobs a good'un

Just as a slant..

Do you think you would get a better camara for lets say £250.
Just thinking aloud really.

Well I spent this afternoon looking at some cameras with the old man and we decided on the Sony Cybershot dsc-hx100v.
Although its considerably more than the £200 budget we were planing on, it pisses on all the other bridge/superzoom cameras.
It costs £380 but you get £40 back.
The SX200 wasn't to bad until you zoomed in then it was a bag of shite.
It constantly went out of focus and its only manual zoom which was jerky.
Couldn't find the L120 anywhere as its an old camera and isn't stocked any more.
The Nikon cool pix p500 image quality was dire and also suffered with focus problems when fully zoomed.
I cant remember the names of any others but the hx100 is the one to get if you can afford it.
The 1080P video looks awesome too even when zoomed in.

So just an up date on cameras, Ive got it down to two and I will buy at the weekend..
The two are..

Panosonic/Lumix TZ 18 or the bridge camera the Panosonic/Lumix FZ 45.
Amazon are doing the FZ45 at £227 which is a lot of camera for your dosh.

I've got an older version of the FX45 (the 18, first one that got a zoom that big.)

Generally happy with it, but given the TZ18 has a similar zoom (appreciate it's a chunk less than the 24, but even with the 45 you'll have issues holding it still enough at that end, etc), I think I'd go for the pocketability of the smaller camera as I'd be more likely to have it with me more of the time.
