About time!

Although why are they getting rid of the paper counterpart to your licence? Less paperwork, less they can screw up?

This is a true win for common sense. Absolutely. I bet Kickstart will be very happy with this! Smile

Heh, don't sweat it, I know Biking News is a bit of a non-section.

It is pretty sensible stuff, although I was expecting a bit more from them.

I'll want a hard copy of insurance certificates anyway - for one thing, how else could you show that you're insured to drive/ride 'other vehicles'?

Ditching counterparts makes sense too, but it's another ballache for those of us who passed A2 tests. It removes one more piece of evidence about how long ago we passed the test, since DVLA knock 2 years off the "From" date when removing the 25kW restriction. Mad

The paper bit isn't for the DVLA. It's for the clerk or the court to write your penalty points on.

This is done using nothing more high-tech than a ballpoint pen. Nothing if not reliable and you are likely to have the same licence details and dates listed on its return, which is more than can be said for the computerised system.

Hi

Suspect the DVLA are battling hard to so they don't have to do this.

It is a small step. Better to just scrap SORN altogether.

All the best

Keith

im actually stunned........
a Govt agency doing something sensible, f*ck me. (im a former civil servant btw)
my paper part has my points all nicely typed, as i had to surrender it at court & it was posted back to me.
kept meaning to send it back, to get them removed, seeing as they "expired" a couple of years ago, but figured it would come back f*cked up, like countless others.
must be getting old...actually agreeing with something from a tory minister.
cheers,
GAZ

Promises, promises. They've gone all quiet on raising the M-way speed limit, this is just more flannel to take your attention off the looming financial meltdown.
BTW, dont forget that the world ends in 2012.
Lets see, North Korea invades S Korea, America intervenes, the Chinese pull the rugs under the financial markets, doom and destruction.
Oh, and have a Merry Christmas.

I believe that a lot of this is all coming from Mike Penning. Ex squaddie, ex fire and rescue, he's about the opposite of your typical political animal, and seems genuinely interested in getting rid of useless paper-chases.

I'm specifically disappointed that they didn't take the opportunity to scrap continuous insurance though. Totally, utterly pointless, since when you get the "Insure it or SORN it demand" through, if you're actually intending to ride without insurance you'll just SORN it without a second thought. It doesn't actually get a single uninsured vehicle off the roads.

Ah well, maybe in the next round of tape cutting.
