Hi there,

Whats the cheapest bike, capable of atleast 33BHP to insure?

Im liking the gs500.

GS500 Insurance group = 7 - TPO £550
SV650 Insurance group = 9 - TPO £800
GSF600 Insurance group = 12 - TPO £800

about £200 difference in insurance for me ;o

Thanks

Do you mean it HAS to be max power limit, or merely 33bhp complient?
About THE cheapest bike to insure is probably a Honda CD200... 15bhp, its a 125 with added 'chug', but usually cheaper than most 'boring' 125's sitting in a hole in the insurance groupings.

600's tend to be most loaded becouse of the popularity of the class.

500 twins, tend to be 'reasonable', but attracting so many 33bhp early-riders they aren't AS cheap as perhaps they could be.

GS500 is a pretty good choice though; is one of the cheapest on insurance.

Howebler.... bike value often has as significant influence as model.

If you fiddle about with the options in the quotes; you'll probably find that the GPz500s doesn't come far off; especially older / cheaper example. ER5 wont be too far away, and the Honda CB500 will be in the same ball-park.

A lot will depend on....

Where you live.
Where you keep the bike.
What your history is.....

Ao run a through a comparision site and see what comes up.

You might be surprised.

To me a 600 was cheaper than a 250. Karma

If using comparison sites, be sure to use a fake phone number and a fake name or your neighbour's address.

Otherwise you will receive loads of phone calls, and junk mail. It's always good to use a throwaway email address too. To stop all the unwanted email.

As above; get some quotes. It will depend for different people. Don't take insurance groups as an absolute guide.

Couldn't believe how bad this situation was, I was still on the internet fiddling with quotes when the phone first started ringing asking what the best quote was so far... last time I 'go compare' anything, guy on the adverts an irritating twat as well, at least you can turn the TV over Laughing

Groups are pretty irrelevant.

Think the KTM 990 Superduke is group 14/15 and the GSXR750 is the same.

One of those is half the price of the other on insurance.

Also a TL1000R is a high insurance group...and its cheaper than both the above bikes Laughing

I'm older, I'm female, the cashback was high and the insurance was low. (possibly with Swinton)

Hi thanks for the replies,

i am aware that my age, location etc will have an effect, but I was looking for a bike which will generally be cheap to insure.

Im getting quoted £800 odd on sv650, and £550 on the gs500.

and yep, im getting quotes on a daily basis, except I wont be getting a new bike till atleast June 2012 Sad.

I also have an outstanding claim with injuries. grr.

My mate is selling a couple of cracking GS500's, drop me a PM if you're interested and I'll give you his number. He is a professional motorcycle mechanic so they are well maintained.

One thing it's definitely worth checking out are older bikes you might not otherwise consider. I got consistently cheaper quotes on old pre-diversion XJ600s and FZR600s than I did a CB500 (£150 & £180 to £190 respectively). This was 20 y.o., no NCB but a full licence. Most other 600s were £400+ if fully faired, £280 if naked or half-faired but the FZR and XJ were super-cheap (I can only presume due to their age, it's the only common factor). If budget in general is an issue, you can also pick up solid, low-mileage examples of them for the £600 mark too if you look around.

Pointless getting quotes now as prices will have changed by the time you are looking at a bike.

Yes I know you are trying to get a feel for the prices, but a rash of claims on one type of bike will see its cost soar on quotes.

Could also be time of year will effect prices, as a lot of people will get a winter hack. Often the very bikes you are looking at, and that could be inflating any prices.

yamaha yzf600r thundercat, it is a sports bike but is cheap to insure as their classification was changed from supersport to a sports tourer.
Was £900 including breakdown, legal and additional finance costs with about 6 modifications and only a 300 excess at age 17 having just past my test.

not in my case ;\ getting quoted same price as sv650.

gs500 seems to be the cheapest! at £550 minimal cover

Dont want to spend over £1000 on a bike, and over £500 on insurance. hope that sets a criteria :p

Age and price of the bike have a massive effect on premiums. I was looking at either a Hornet 600 or a FZR600. In the end I bought an FZR. I'm getting quoted £680 quid for a 1995 FZR600R (Bought for £800) TPFT. Whereas about a 2001 Hornet (worth about £1500) was getting me quotes of 620 quid TPFT, which is not much of a difference to say the FZR is a sports bike and I'm only 18 with 1 year NCB. And with the added few hundred quid of the bike price, the FZR was (surprisingly) the cheapest option.

So there are too many variables to say that a certain bike is going to be cheapest for you. Just look at bikes that you like, and if you think there is a chance you would buy one, just do a quote online (try www.thebikeinsurer.co.uk). It only takes about 5 minutes to do and it can help you decide whether a certain bike is an option for you.

All I did was go on websites like ebay, biketrader, and looked at private ads and dealer ads. Then if I liked the look of the bike I'd go on thebikeinsurer and get myself a quote. If it was too much I'd move on.

Hope that helps.

Have you tried looking at older, smaller bikes like the GPX250?
