SR125 holed piston

Hello all,

I'm going to look at a 2000 Yamaha SR125 tomorrow. Seller has told me that the piston is holed as there is no compression.

I appreciate that I wont know whats actually gone until is stripped down but does anyone know if these are known for pistons failing. Its only got 21K on the clock and I know these engines are known to go on forever ...

It might have a holed piston... It would require the wrist pin or piston itself to fail then the con rod to batter a hole down the middle of it. To be honest that's very unlikely on any bike especially a single cylinder as once something fails it'll have no power from other cylinders to keep the destruction going.
It's much more likely that they forgot to put oil in it, ran it too low and destroyed the rings / cylinder / top end / gear box. No compression on a 2 stroke isn't a problem and should only knock a couple of hundred quid off it's value. However on a 4 stroke it should drop the value of the bike down to that of a rolling chassis as it's likely the engine is ready for the bin.

Hi thanks for the reply. I think I'll assume that its new engine time then. He wants £250 for the bike and the cheapest engine I can find is £200. I'm not sure the whole package will be worth £450 so dont think I'll bother.
