Hi all,
I've decided that I'm going to rebuild my TZR after it sitting for about a year. It stopped running a little while back, after which I gave up with it. I kicked it over the other day, to be greeted by a squeaking noise coming from the cylinder. I've since popped the top end off to have look, and it seems that it was the rings on the cylinder wall that was causing the noise.
The top of the piston is black with soot, but not excessively so. There are loads of vertical lines (not gouges, just light marks) and on the leading edge some blow by marks, I intend to replace the piston kit (piston, rings, pin, bearing etc) and have the barrel honed (had it done when I put it together 18 months ago, but was a test and revved it too hard from cold) as the barrel has a number of non-uniform shiny spots.
Do those shiny bits sound consistent with being revved too much from cold or am I looking at a deeper cause? (oval barrel, misshapen piston etc?) I won't lie, I'm useless with 2 stroke engines.
As its been sat there is a very small amount of surface rust on the crank, and I suspect the crank seals have dried out, will it NEED a full strip and clean to fix? Ideally the cases can stay together (from memory the seals can be changed without stripping, its more the rust concerning me)
Hopefully I won't need a great deal of money to sort it, need 2 powervalve cables, a seal, the crank seals, piston kit and base gaskets at the very least already ____________________ '84 TS50X, '91 TZR125, '89 CBR400RR, '91 VFR400R NC30, '98 R1
