PostPosted: 14:11 - 31 Dec 2011    Post subject: Sportsbike around £1500 Reply with quote

My budget shrunk massively so I'm looking for something around £1500. IL4 or VTwin I don't mind.

I missed out on a TLR but I'm not looking at those anymore since they don't really fit Laughing (yes I R Fail)

I just want something cheap that I can still have fun on and also commute if I need to. I've mainly been looking at G/J ZX6R's and also been thinking about the ZX7?

Anything else feel free recommend

How about one of these?

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201149433900421/sort/priceasc/usedbikes/model/yzf/make/yamaha/page/3/radius/1500/postcode/ss38ed/quicksearch/true?logcode=p

Yamaha YZF600 Thundercat. One of my friend's has one and its an absolute beast. Top end of your budget, however I think that they're worth it.

plenty of choice at that budget man

cbr600f - excellent all rounder
zx6r, should get a J in that budget
srad
thundercat
zx7r - best looking late 90's sports bike in my opinion (is why I have one), not the most comfortable on long commutes though, proper ass up head down. Its also about 20kg heavier than any of the others I have listed

plus then you have 900/thou's, but not sure you were looking at those?

old blade
zx9r
tls/tlr which you have discounted

The GSXR SRAD is also a brilliant option. Me and my friend have just completed an engine transplant on one, and that was just because he wanted a 600 instead of a 750. Smile

Thanks for the suggestions Karma

I'll look into all of those mentioned, I really like the look of the zx7 and they are pretty cheap too. 1000s are out because insurance is ghey although I haven't checked how much a 9r would cost

Bacon's ZX7R is in my garage atm, for the money it is a hell of a lot of bike. His was pretty much mint, low mileage and under your budget. Has an agricultural feel to the engineering (i.e. quite simple but robust) which I really like. Crashes well, sounds good. The thick USD forks, big discs, 190 section rear, fat swingarm, boxy rear end, big dual headlights and wide front cowling give it a nice beefy 90s look.

Only thing that I don't like is the riding position which is a bit too extreme for me, it is also rather heavy if you are used to sports 6s.

If I had £1500 to spend I would aim for a 99/00 CBR600f. Should scrape into your budget. I have a 2001, excellent do it all bike, need to rev it which IIRC you are not too keen on but it goes like stink when ridden properly, comfy, light etc etc. Either that or an older ZX6r.

On the 7r maybe the riding position could be fixed with the help of rear sets and taller clip ons?

Anyway if I aim for a 600 I'll probably try and get a J model ZX6 or if I'm lucky an A1P

As its been said, just have a look at whats for sale near you and pick the best value/most suitable one for you. I got my 600 fizzer on that basis and im really happy with it. Sure for 1.5k you would do well. Thumbs Up

Picked up my GSXR600 k1 for £1500 - better looking than the ZX6R j series you'll get for £1500 (you won't get a R6 for this price and if you do, it won't have a 2nd gear). They run a lot better in winter than the ZX and are pretty solid bikes.

J ZX6R - legendary Surprised Get a good one and you will be v happy.
Fix the brakes, enjoy the awesome power, has cracking midrange for a 600. Handles well but suspension can be a bit stiff.

CBR600 FX - decent bike - does everything but nowhere near as grunty in the midrange as the zx6r, clip ons are above the top yoke so bit of a less sporty riding position, just a lot more bland and boring than the zx6r. But very easy to ride and good solid/reliable. Suspension lot softer but reacts well to adjustments. Suprisingly excellent on the track too.

hth Thumbs Up

How the riding position treats you depends on the person tbh. I am 6ft and think it is a torture rack, my brother (bacon) is 5ft 6ish and finds it comfortable. Much prefers it comfort wise compared to his old B1H anyway.

Have a sit on one see what you think. One thing to consider is the 8k valve check intervals on the 7r. It is a relatively simple task if you know what you are up against but most jap bikes are 16k, if you are used to ducatis you probably wont be that bothered by an 8k valve check Wink .

I will sell you my 2001 600 GSXR in blue/white, just has a slight oil leak under the stator from the casing. Oh it would need an MOT and tax but it went through last MOT not needing a thing done

I've got a G2 6R for sale mate Smile Serviced regularly by myself cause I've used it for motorways. Bikes is in good condition with a small crack on the front. Does unfortunatly have 42k on the clock but its been restricted since 10k. Never let me down. New chain and sprockets less than 100 miles ago and got brand new front pads ready to go on. Also had new Diablo 3s fitted few hundred miles ago Smile

Would be looking for about 1400 or there abouts if interested Smile

I sold my immaculate (did need new chain) ZX6R J1 in 2010 for £1150. Probably the worst deal I've ever done.

Now looking for another J1/2 and will probably end up paying more than 40% more for the same bike!

Going for more in worse condition in some cases on ebay. I'm not in any hurry to sell it so I'm not going to give it away.

Another vote here for CBR600F4/X i love mine like crazy, so easy to ride and wheelies brilliantly. Very confident inspiring bike.
Don't get an SRAD, Worst mistake of my life, comfy bike and all that shit but the scars and limp i have from one and other experiances from them too, i just can't suggest one.

Maybe but at the end of the day its a high milage late 90's sports bike, your looking at a grand at best. Plus its winter, throw in a blowy and you might make £1050 Razz

Ran some quotes and an 02 ZX9R and 02 ZX6R both come out exactly the same at about £700-800 and the ZX7R comes out about £100 cheaper. Weird that the 9 and the 6 come out the same

Servicing is not a problem but I don't want to have to do loads of shit as soon as I get the bike Laughing

I look at the CBR F's too Thumbs Up

EDIT: 900 Blade also costs £850 to insure TPO or £890 TPFT

Agreed. Got my absolutely MINT G2 ZX6R last year for £1100 I think it was and I couldn't have got a better example. Had lower miles too.
