I know a lot of you on here are really into your pets and reptiles, so though I would share my new addition with you.

https://a5.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc7/s320x320/385408_10150503579437768_751247767_8778969_968040285_n.jpg

Sorry for the poor quality pic, but I have just got it home and still have some stuff to sort out before it gets settled into its new house, so I will get some more pics soon.

Just a wee baby. Female. Only a couple of months old, eats and sheds well.

My girlfriend's brother went all the way to Fife to pick it up for us.

I hope Elliott doesn't get too jealous. Confused

Aye we know Fife has a load of snakes. Razz

Best pet a man can have. No need for walks or stuff.
Feed it and lift the poo/pee.
I used to look after a Rock Python. It got live chickens and rats for food.

But you can't buy live food for snakes in UK I was informed.
So it has to be frozen mouses.

I got barred from 3 pet shops for buying rat's & gerbils to feed my Burmese
just don't tell them what your buying them for, but they do get suspicious when you buy half a dozen rats every month

my Burmese would not eat pinkies, he would only feed on live prey

Yeah, its a corn snake.

I used to breed mice for a couple of years to feed my dragon and other peoples dragons and snakes locally, so I am considering doing that again. We only stopped doing it a few months ago because of the cold weather we had here as they were kept outside with no heating, etc. (The previous year they were kept in doors).

I was told that snakes ate whole animals not parts of.

I let the Python kill two or three chooks then leave it with one and I froze the others for later. For experiment, I cut the legs off one and froze them too.
Defrosted and left in the snake cage and they were gone in the morning. I don't think they walked away.

I think if the snake kills it it will eat it. Or if hungry enough it will eat it.
Snakes lie for weeks without any food in the wild and probably, like most kept animals, they are well fed so can be picky.

I tried keeping the rats that were caught around the plant but that becomes a chore too. Unless you have a lot of snakes to eat the prey animals shop-bought is easier.

I think if you go to different pet shops and buy 4 hamsters/mouses at a time they probably would NOT join up the dots.

Banned from a pet shop. Embarassed Embarassed Laughing

That phrase just makes me picture Nobcat. Now that was a man getting into his pet.

Yes. I know it was a photoshop, when a cat gets a cock in it's mouth there is A LOT more blood.
Don't ask.

normally snakes eat whole prey but they will eat parts on occasion if presented right
I used to feed garter snakes strips of fish when they were babies
mrs wouldn't let me feed live goldfish Crying or Very sad

I noticed they use their tongue to taste the food before killing and eating so I surmised they may recognise the same taste or their own on food they'd killed earlier.
It was in the room not a lab so no control to say yae or nae.

Fasinating beasts though.

I caught a small Gaboon Viper (14") chasing after a massive toad in the garden one afternoon. I scooped up the viper into a big jar and then chucked the toad in. The viper scoffed the toad when it stopped moving and when I checked a couple of days later the bulge in the snake was gone.
When the python ate prey it had a lump for 7-10 days then 4-5 days later it had a poo.
I think the venom of the viper is so powerful and infused throughout the prey animal that digestion takes much less time.

When I found the two the toad was hopping/limping away from the snake and the snake was simply tracking the toad waiting for the venom to take full effect.

If I were to keep a venomous snake it would be the Gaboon Viper very cool snake biggest fangs, most venom (CC) and probably the most colourful.

depending on the species snakes have 2 types of venom
one attacks the neurological system (paralyses the prey) or Cytotoxins that cause cells to rupture (blood cells etc)

it was thought for years that some venom did cause the food to be digested easier
but IIRC this was disproved, having more to do with the size of the snake
the temp and other variables play more of a part in the digestion time

The Cytotoxins will cause food to digest quicker as the prey is more or less beginning to be broken down/digested through the action of the venom.
Saliva and it's enzymes start digestion. Venom is modified saliva.
Constrictors are possibly more primitive snakes and rely mostly on powerful digestive acids in the stomach to breakdown prey.
I kept my Python in an IR pad heated house at a constant 27 Deg C the Gaboon Viper I caught was kept in a jar at the same temp outside probably cooler at night.
Puff Adder is considered one of or the most dangerous snakes in Africa. Due to their relatively common occurrence, camoflage and belligerent and aggressive manner. Where most snakes will move away from danger Puff Adders will sit where they are.
The can inject a lot of venom which rapidly starts to work on tissue and blood. Causing severe pain and shock.
Anti-venoms may be available but not in all areas so in the more remote parts of the bush snake bites can mean death after a few days of agonising pain. In any case use of anti-venoms is very difficult due to snake identity and amount to give. The anti-venom can do as much damage as the venom if it is not given correctly.

The standard practice when an African sees a snake it to mash it to a pulp. Whether venomous or not. Not all venomous snakes are 'dangerous' as most will not bite unless disturbed or threatened.

If you are bitten the advice is to catch the snake.... Shocked for identification for proper anti-venom and also try not to get excited.
Impossible as nearly all folk have a severe reaction to a live/dead snake in their vicinity.

I found several forest cobras caught in snares that farmers set to catch other animals. I could get the cobra out without a bite but the farmers were not so bold and would generally kill the animal.

not always true but I found through the years smaller snakes tend to be more skittish and prone to biting
Cobra's in general are pretty easy to handle small vipers tend to be nasty little shits
I much preferred pythons to handle

Quote:
The presence of enzymes in snake venom was once believed to be an adaptation to assist digestion. However, studies of the western diamondback rattlesnake, a snake with highly proteolytic venom, show that venom has no impact on the time required for food to pass through the gut.

must admit I've been away from snakes for a while now
but in my teens I spent most weekends in the reptile house at the local zoo

Easiest Pet.
Tank (Herpetarium)
Bowl for water.
Heat source. I used an Infra Red pad as they are almost zero maintenance and very zone-al i.e. they only heat the water in the animal and not the tank or furnishings.
Reptiles regulate their body temperature by moving from hot to cold.
With a lamp you need to provide some cover for the animal to get out the heat.

Food of frozen baby/adult rodents (Mice rats rabbits) or chicks/chickens, insects for smaller snakes.

The only chore is the clean out after the shit. It really stinks like shit should.

Apart from that they are simple. I treated the python I kept with anti parasite drugs I got from our vet. The prey animal can be injected with this to kill any parasites in the snake.

A good how to keep snakes book/s is a vital thing too.

read up on the subject
as I said most species differ in what the need and ease of handling
if you didn't like crickets I doubt you will enjoy putting dead baby mice into a pan of hot water to bring them
up to temperature and then dangling it by the tail for the snake to strike it

personally in a couple of years when my kid's leave home I want to get back into it
I'd love to get involved with breeding green tree pythons

when there born they can be yellow, red or even blue
