Well, just came back from my MOT. What started as a 15 minute job just lasted 5 hours, and it's still not over.

Took in my Aprilia RS125. They started the MOT, everything is finished and it's failed. Not a surprise as there's always something.

Brake pads (front and back) are gone. Back ones are practically metal on metal, and front not far off. Fair enough, replace them. Then there's the chain, it's got some dry spots from where it's seized up being outside. Again, fair enough...

What I ended up replacing was the chain, rear sprocket, front and back brakes, a brake light, various nuts and bolts and I've got to go and find an Aprilia RS125 caliper. Basically there was a bolt snapped off inside and we couldn't change the pads. We viced it, heated it, and eventually drilled it only to go straight into the aluminium. New one then...

I've spent £220 so far, and I haven't even got the caliper yet Sad I can't say I wasn't ready for it, but christ it was a dangerous bike when I put it in there. Both brakes and the chain gone? I'm lucky, real lucky...

Anyone else taken theirs in for a 'quick check' and come out 6 hours later and bankrupt?

(BTW - the mechanic was excellent, always talking me through and telling me my options. Brilliant guy, and they cut me a good deal there for fixing it. Top guys...)

That sort of thing happens almost everytime I take my bike round to Keiths. What starts as a quick job often ends with me leaving the bike there for a few days while parts are sourced.

One time it even ended with me in A&E....

That's alot of money for the pads, sprockets and a chain..then again I have no idea now much the parts cost Wink.

Count yourself lucky; my mini failed this week on a rotten rear subframe, rotten sills, exhaust emmisions, four bald tyres and some other stuff Laughing Thumbs Down

Hi

Caliper should be easy. They survive quite well and plenty of RS125s get written off. The same caliper has been used on the Aprilia sports 125s since they launched the Sintesi in 1988.

Rear pads are cheap, but do not last long. Doing the work yourself a new set of front and rear pads should be under £30. A chain and sprocket kit is £40 from M&P.

The rest is labour.

The pads on the front are held in with a pin that is just pushes in, but is then located with a small clip.

Anyway Col, how many people did you frighten on the way to A&E by washing you eyes out whilst in the front right seat of the car?

All the best

Keith

Hi

Ouch. £540. Cheaper to do a course at Merton and then be a professional bike mechanic yourself.

All the best

Keith

I was proud of myself when I took the battery out, charged it, and put it back in. I think valve shims would be a bit of a stretch. Thinking

He gave me the option of cheaper parts but I chose the better makes. Also, some stuff he's had to order in or phone round breakers to get.

Believe me, £220 for the work they did today was pretty damn good. They did everything bar strip the engine Smile

Another thing I realised recently is that there is no re-test anymore. You have to pay £15 every time the bike fails the MoT. The trick is to not let it fail. Confused

That's a good point actually. The place I take my cars does it for free, but the thing is the guy in the bike MoT place said it was the law now. I shouldn't have gone there really, I should have looked for a better place to take my bike. Oh well never mind. Neutral

If the bike leaves the workshop its classed as another test and they are bending the rules if they don't charge you.

Last time they mot'ed my bike it came out worse, they adjusted the tyre so that it rubbed on the swing arm....

twats.

That's not what the guy told me that tested and failed my bike. He also showed it to me on the back of the failure sheet. The thing is, they don't HAVE to charge again if they want to be decent, just that most of them do as they can legally do it. Thumbs Down

Hmm well that's weird Kev because the guy specifically told me otherwise. I don't think I'll go back there anyway, I've heard things about them. Confused

I'll hunt and ask around for a place that does free re-tests too. I know a few ex-bikers around my place (they have 'family obligations' now Rolling Eyes ).

Go to JT's in bridgend, free restest and they spent an extra 15mins fixing bro's headlight and didn't charge any extra.

Right I am at work now and it says on the board that you get a free re test if the work is carried out at the place where the vehicle is tested or you can take it away and you can have a full re test within the next 24 hours and if its anything over that it is a full fee.

My boss said that is was 14 days but it was changed a couple of months ago.
