The chain is jumping loads, it had three stiff links which i've managed to loosen off. The chain has made contact with the swinging arm. The chain has done 12000miles and it's lubed/tensioned on a regular basis. It is a DID heavy duty chain. It's still jumping loads and touching the swinging arm, the rear sprocket looks fine.

The last thing i need right now is the expense of replacing the chain, if it comes down to it then i'll have to find the money from somewhere.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Sam

What about the front sprocket?

If it has been lubed, cleaned and tensioned regularly then it shouldn't of had stiff links and shouldn't be jumping around.

Have you looked at the wheel alignment as well?

The life expectancy of a chain is 8000 - 15000 miles depending on how the bike is ridden, if you revving the arse of it you'll get a lot less. At 12000 it's not going to have a lot left in it and if it's had stiff links and it's touching the swinging arm, I'd say it's had it. Sad

Thanks for the replies guys. The alignment is spot on. The bike is used all year round in all weathers, maybe that has taken its toll. Looks like a new chain then. . . any suggestions?

Sam.

Get sprockets and chain together. I like the DID VM chains, expensive but they last a long time.

The main thing is just to look after it well, get a Scottoiler if you're lazy like me.

I'll definately change the sprockets aswell. I'm contemplating getting the scottoiler.

Thanks for all the advice guys,

Sam.

If funds are tight you can get away without the sprockets unless you can see they are wearing.
The second chain might wear that bit quicker.
I've generally changed sprockets every other time no bother at all.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

I've managed to sort it. I generously coated the chain in penetrating oil and left it for a few days, cleaned /lubed/tensioned the chain and it seems to be fine.

All but one stiff link has gone, there was a load of muck/shit/road grime from near the front sprocket, about a tennis ball size amount.

Hopefully i can last this chain a little longer.

Sam.
