did some work on a mate's CBR (03 plate) a little while ago - changing his exhaust, and we found that the oil filter is located behind the downpipes, so the only way to get to it is to remove the downpipes to access it.
Surely this is not as ridiculous a design feature as it seems to be?!
there must be a simpler way to access it, so for future reference, to save him taking it to a garage and paying for it, is there an easier way to get it off?

A strap wrench is a useful thing for tricky oil filters!

I had a 2004 RR which I think is the same as the 2003 and got the filter out no problem. I definitely didn't need to remove the downpipes.

We were changing his entire system anyway, but the filter did seem unreachable from where we were at, seemed a ridiculous place to put it!

That's exactly what I had to do on mine. Funnily the dealer had put the filter on far too tight after the 600 mile service.

K&N filters are good as they have a nut on the end of the filter so you can undo it with a spanner instead of butchering it with a screwdriver.

Not really, just wipe oil over the rubber O ring on the filter before screwing it on, then only do it up hand tight.

Should come off easily the next time.

Hand tight is usually good enough. If your worried its not tight enough then mark the filter and the housing with a marker pen or paint. You can tell if its moved if the marks don't line up.

Had trouble getting the filter of my 1997 CBR600F. Used one of those universal removal tools with a long extension bar to get past the pipes.
