I went to a bike meet tonight and on the way home spent the best of a 30 mile journey at excessive speeds on the motorway. When I got home my bike was very hard to push up the garden, upon closer inspection I realised that I had just nearly burnt my finger on the rear brake disc, it appears that it has seized on but I'm not quite sure how. It is very spongy at the moment and I'm not quite sure what caused it or how to fix it, any ideas?

(at a guess) I'd say it was binding slightly which would account for the superheating of the brake, again guessing but if its heated up enough it might have expanded to a point where its on all the time...

Have you got a torque wrench? you will need one to put the calipers back on ... are the back brakes twin brakes? it may be a bit of dirt has gotten lodged and the fluid is getting to one side more than the other...

I'm pretty new to this myself i may be wrong but its worth having a look, see if both discs are hot on the back, if only one is then its only one side binding.. i'd be interested what it is because i think i'm having a similar problem..

It is only single disc brake on the rear, I will be stripping it down tomorrow and seeing if I can see a problem with it, maybe bleed it as well. I've been home for about 20 minutes now and the wheel is easier to turn so it looks as though it has expanded, going to strip it tomorrow I think and poke stuff.

If the pedal feel spongy, its best to replace the fluid as the extreme heat from it binding can boil the fluid.

Mine did this a couple of times so i bled them and forced the pistons in and out a couple of times and its been fine since.

Must have missed this...

My ZXR brakes were fucked when I first bought it, though the front calipers on mine were the worst. I thought it was pretty hard to push so got a second hand set of calipers (complete with spanking new pads) for £20. What had happened was the pistons were seized solid in corrosion etc and were stuck on the disc, causing mine to heat up like a bastard. Hopefully you'll get it sorted but I found that ZXR calipers were quite cheap second hand so didn't bother trying to repair the old one. Have you got any pics of the offending item?
