Basically the Subframe is bugged on the R1 - I didnt know this when I brought it.
My friend wants to buy it off me for a 'project' bike as I would like to go back to my 636. He was going to re-weld the bike through a professional.
Today, he has been phoning around and this is the text I got

'Been making calls, & the subframe is all part of the main frame according to Yamaha. So Id have to cut it and weld a different subframe (which is what I was going to do anyway) - the DVLA will see it as a write off and only good for parts. Even if I told no one, should I crash the insurance would be null and void.
The newer models are ok to do it, but on the 99 welding the frame on the frame place weakens the main frame making it dangerous'

----

I see rear subframes on ebay alot, which is where I was going to buy from, so this news is a little shocking - Im just double checking that he IS correct in what he is saying, and there is no other way around it..
He has told me to sell it for parts.

So is this bike now void with my insurance as well?! Mad

When an early R1 suffers crash damage to the rear sub-frame then insurance companies tend to write them off.But people like Motoliners in Maidstone may well be able to straighten it so long as it is not too far out of alignment with some careful heating.

But if the frame was going to be cut about anyway, then where is the problem?

If we're talking about the Yamaha according to CMSL the 99 had a one piece frame, later models it was a two piece frame. If repairing it would make its insurance void (?), then you could look at the option of getting a replacement frame (the hassle of parting one out is your always left with a box off stuff no-one wants) and then selling it on.

Thats what I thought anyway... Its been re-welded on at a lower angle, Thats why it needs to come off and a new one place on at the original level - So I can take pillions if needed.
My only option is to have his mate do it, and I keep riding it, or sell for parts.

A good welder with a 3-phase TIG welder would be able to do the welding and it would not take too much to fabricate brackets to be able to use a later sub-frame from a later model R1.

One from a 2002 R1 is seperate from the main frame.
