Hi there,

I am Svenja from Kiel and would like to introduce myself. Though I am not new to motorbiking, I am new to the UK as a travel destination.

https://pic.endurowandern.eu/Tag2-P1020497-UK-border.jpg
(last summer at the border

Last summer I've spent three weeks in England and Scotland with my KLX250, tent, speeping bag and frying pan and it was my best ride ever. What a beautiful country that is. I fell in love with full breakfasts, tea rooms, the landscape, the loneliness of the highlands, driving on the wrong side :-) and I really, really love scottish angus beef, wow! (I had rib eyes 16 days in a row)

https://pic.endurowandern.eu/Tag3-P1020563-Pocklington.jpg
(2nd night in the UK, Pocklington)

Kiel is only 215 km south of Esbjerg/DK where the ferry to Harwich departs. This summer I will travel the UK again and will have a whole month for it. So much more to see and so many beautiful places I would like to see again.

See you on the road or in the forum.

Obvious troll is obvious - we didn't get 3 weeks of summer last year. Razz

Heh, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Did you do the Applecross pass?

@Rogerborg: Oh yes, I've had my share of rain but weather was mostly fine.

Applecross? Yes, I've ridden it. Great, but I think the Hardknott Pass
beats Applecross hands down. 30% steep and really, really small. I've
camped in Escdale and that was really cold and wet.

Don't need a visa, but need an official ID e.g. passport National Identity Card, etc. Driving license won't do it.

The rest is true - welcome Thumbs Up Very Happy

You shouldn't need documents to cross any EU border, but we thumbed our nose at the Treaty of Amsterdam in 1997 and are essentially going it along in Fortress UKia. We're actually trying to lock things down further by demanding Ze Papers from traffic from the Channel Islands and Paddyland, but it keeps getting killed in committee.

In practice, I know a bloke (down the pub) who got through Immigration using a bank statement and a club membership card with his photo on it (plus some phone calls). Or you could just brass neck it, bolt straight through (at a water port, I wouldn't recommend it at an airport), then hide behind the first Proper Plod that you see.

@snikks: oh, yes. The ferry to the university. That's a great thing. At least in summer...

@Joe: England is not a Schengen state and so there is a border control. I had to learn that, also... :-)

@Dilyan: Yes, thats right. They didn't check anything, just wanted to see my ID card. Did'nt even have to put off the helm.

I camped in Eskdale last year, in June. It rained every day for 10 days Laughing The Hardknott pass is great in a car (even my fat Discovery) but I'd imagine it is great on a bike!

Nice write up Thumbs Up

Yep, is has. That was the time I noticed, my old tent is'nt waterproof any more. I was there on 5th of July and put up my tent on the muddy green beyond the small creek.

Ive also camped in Eskdale, I live in the lake district and its only a few miles from where Im sat now! We dont have much weather other than rain so we tend to just describe the type of rain (drizzle, spitting, driving, pissing it down etc).

Glad you liked the roads and welcome to the forum! Wink

Welcome to the forum. I lived in Germany Land when I was a nipper. What little memories I have of the place I do cherish.

If you like the roads in Scotland and the scenery I would recomend a tour of Ireland. North and South.

@Pinkfloyd: It took me a while to find out what a nipper is. It's not a tool but a little boy, isn't it? (Sometimes google translate is not really helpful)
Ireland is right on top of my list for one of the next journeys. I hope it is deserted(?) as the Scottish Highlands are. I like that.

@Villers: Lake District was absolutely cool. And I loved the Yorkshire Dales, especially a small town called Hawes. I came through Hawes on the 4th day of my journey. It wasn't raining so bad in Eskdale, but the ground was muddy from the rainy days before.

Some part of Ireland is empty. I will mail you a few pictures, saves filling this page up.

And yes, nipper is young child. I left Germany when I was about 10. I lived in Dusseldorf and in Beilefeld. Last time I was there I was down in the mountains in Nurnburg. Lovely little city.

Hi Svenja and welcome to BCF.

I went camping in Eskdale last year too, with some friends during Easter. We came back over Hard Knott Pass. First time I'd ridden over it. It's great fun even on a little YBR125 Laughing
How did you find travelling all that distance on the KLX250?

@James: Oh, thank you. That's quite a lot of text to read there.
Though I doubt it makes any sense after it was mangled
through Google translation :-)

@Pinkfloyd: Empty sounds good and the pics you've sent makes me
uncertain where to travel first. Devon, Cornwall, Wales, Ireland,
Scotland? Shame on you! :-)

@Kingley: Is there anybody here, who hasn't been camping in
Eskdale last summer? No wonder the place was so crowded :-)

The KLX is a genuine adventure travel bike. It's got the huge
adventure gas tank (7.7 l) and a wide and comfortable seat (13cm
wide). Just kidding: It is fun to ride and I love it. My first ride was to
France which was a trip of 3.500 km and the bike ran great. On
hardknott pass last year it was difficult not to do wheelys just
by a twist of the wrist. So much power? No, 30% but ascent.... :-)

Allow me to be of assistance. Excuse the crudeness of the picture but this is BCF.

Your intended route from Harwich is as follows.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v494/be1ly/maplol.png

Arrive at Harwich. Ride down through London heading towards the south west. You'll eventually run out of road at Penzance.

Turn around and head North East towards Bristol. You will eventually see a great big bridge, Hop across that and welcome to Wales.

I have chosen a route through the middle of wales simply because there is a road there that you must experience. You can see it

here

From there head to Holyhead and hop onto the ferry to Dublin. Turn left at Dublin and follow the coast all the way around until you arrive in Belfast. Grab the Belfast to Stranraer boat and head north east until you run out of road at John O Groats and then head south from there until you get back to Harwich. Hop on the boat and go home.

Milage? Lots.

Time taken? Weeks!

dont forget the pictures. Thumbs Up

@Beelzebob: Oh, danke schön. Edinburgh? Da bin ich doch im letzten Jahr über die große Brücke gefahren :-)

@Pinkfloyd: Thanks a lot for the enormous effort you put into the map. That is basically what I had intended to ride but without Ireland. So maybe I should visit Ireland the long way round and instead spare out Scotland. Both might be too much for one journey. But I will calculate, how many days are realistic to ride this tour. Lasst summer ist was 4.500 km and 23 days.

Marki: yep! Norway is great. I've been there in 2007 on my KTM and it sure is worth another journey in maybe a few years. The ferry to Oslo starts only a short distance from where I live in Kiel.

Yes outside of Cork, Limerick & Dublin Ireland is pretty much deserted. Plus they are in the Eurozone so easy for you. (Saying that Ireland is very expensive compared to Germany).

My only issue with Ireland is that some of the roads aren't maintained very well. (Not that they are here, but Ireland's worse).

I've never been on the bike to Germany but have visited many many times due to my job.

Most of the German people and Dutch love the area where I live because of the hills!!
