Hi everyone.

I've recently begun to try to do ride reports and record some trips that I'm taking on my bike (got a DriftHD for christmas so putting it to good use!).

My issue is with microphone placement.
I am using an external mic (the drift branded one which plugs into the AV slot on the back of the camera) and have severe problems with wind noise and saturation.
The best recording has been taken with the microphone next to my ear in the recess of my helmet but even so there is a lot of external noise which I assume is the wind. Near to my mouth has too much wind noise even with the vents shut.....

I'm using mic sensitivity level 2 (out of 3). Should I turn this down to 1 or will it just make all the noise and voice quieter thereby negating any benefit?

Thanks

I guess you want to talk on it as you're going along?

Could always put the voice over on afterwards?

Or you could try shrouding the mic.

If you don't want to talk on it as you're riding put the mic under the seat for best exhaust noise, but no wind noise.

Would it not be best on the chin guard bit? Maybe to the left or the right hand side so you don't breath into it.

Yep, I want to talk as I'm going along.
I've tried recording as a voice-over, but it feels weird to watch a bike video without any external noise.... I'm not artsy enough to use a musical background and talk over that because I'm mostly discussing topical issues.

It's a pity, because today I had the camera running when I went into a Tesco car park and got footage of the car in front of me parking on the 'Motorcycles only' bays.
After beeping at them, they sheepishly came back to their car and drove it off Smile

Try popping a hole in a piece of dense foam and slotting over the mic. Pretty dense stuff used on my pillion seat muted most noise from a mic used in my car Thumbs Up

Turn the Sensitivity down to 1. it will work fine up to around 60 mph, unless your lid is a complete wind trap.

I guarandamntee it Thumbs Up

Up my rectum is my personal preference! Vlogger's often chat a LOT of frass, so it'll make no difference where you stick it up!

What happened to the natural aspirated noise of a IL4 or V-twin? You can think about lacing your mic hole with stockings and seeing how that goes.

I suppose the reason why I personally think Vlogging is bad is that a lot of your attention is diverted to thinking of things to say to the cam and therefore not focusing on hazards which are presented in front of you.

I was going to get a new HD camera, but then realised I won't be using it much.

If I try Vlogging at the speeds I normally do during my commute, I'd find myself rear ending a range rover before too long, or finding myself under the wheels of the No.94 bus!

Stick cam somewhere nice, stick mic isolated from wind in exhaust, then voice over post-editing. Thumbs Up Safest most enjoyable way. That way, you don't have to spoil a decent video with ramblings! Or if you feel what you're saying isn't particularly youtube friendly.

Mind you, on my commutes, I might have a ramble about which girl from gloucestershire uni I want to tackle and donkey punch! So might make it amusing.

Video is being uploaded to YouTube as we speak!
It's right at the end of a long-ish trip so I've cut it down and done a pretty short edit of it - I'm just finishing up talking about riding a mountain bike to practise off-road skills.....

I'm gonna try turning the gain down and possibly covering the mic a bit more. At the moment it already has a pretty thick foam covering so we'll see if it works.

I understand that the camera can be mounted on the bike and I really enjoy the sound that my engine makes (it's an in-line 4, 600cc Honda Hornet engine so when you rev the nuts off it in a tunnel it makes a good noise Cool ), but it wasn't a particularly nice afternoon here (weatherwise) and the road was undramatic.

I accept also that a lot of ramblings can be ignored from moto vloggers, I just wanted to stick my oar in and see how it went - the main reason for starting the vlogging was to document my trips which will hopefully contain lots of footage of lovely countryside with nothing to spoil it but the noise of the bike or possibly a Stereophonics tune or two Wink

Try turning the sensitivity down to 1, that should sort some of it out but you may have to talk louder so your voice isnt canceled out too.
Is there any foam stuff over the mic? I had a mic once which sounded terrible without the foam over the mic, but sounded perfect with it.

Do you have a breath deflector (or what ever they call 'em) if so put it on the inside of that near your nose you wont hear your breathing to much and the wind should not be able to reach it.
