So after thinking about where to go this year for my holiday I've ruled out Scandinavia and decided instead to go to Italy. The plan is this

Ride from my house in Holland to Hildesheim Germany to get the AutoZug train which will take us to Verona in Italy. The train is booked.

We ride down to Naples stopping half way a night in Perugia before continuing down to Naples. At Naples we get a car ferry across to Sicily and tour round there.

Anyone done such a trip, used this Naples/Palermo carry ferry or toured Sicily and can offer advice, good places to visit, recommended hotels on the way down or in Sicily itself. Taking the Beamer, naturally.

Thanks mucho in advance

Sounds great. Can't offer any words of advice.

Always fancied using the train, you'll have to let us know what it's like.

I've used the train before usually from Dusseldorf to Verona but it's all booked up when we want to go. So I've had to use Hildesheim this time.
This time our sleeping compartment also has a Toilet and shower and you get a breakfast too in with the price. What we found last time was that the restaurant car has too few staff working it and it takes absolutely ages to get served, so this time we'll be taking butties with and then just buy the odd beer from the bar.
You ride the bikes onto the open carriage, where the train staff strap them down (properly). At the other end the straps come off and you ride off the train - easy peasy and really convenient. It saves miles and miles of boring motorway riding, petrol and hotels and you arrive the next morning (usually leaves Germany around 5pm). It probably costs more than riding down but I like the time it saves and you arrive in Italy all fresh and ready for the journey south.

I loved Verona when I was working there many moons ago.Just a shame that I spent too long working and not enough time looking around the place.

I have a list of places to visit in Italy when I eventually get loaded up with Mrs.Fizzer and go to places like Verona and Padova, which is another place that I worked but did not see much more than the inside of a technical department and the train station.I also worked in Catania on Sicily, where the people there were very accomadating but insisted that I eat much more of the sea food produce than I could manage.

Much better on a motorbike though.
