Yes, for 125 you need to do a CBT.

For a 50cc moped you can just ride it if you have a car licence...

If you obtained your full car licence before 1 February 2001 you are automatically entitled to ride a moped without L-plates (D-plates in Wales).

CBT is still recommended though if you have never ridden a bike before.

Edit: Damn, beaten to the internet Smile BUT I gave more information Wink

Relevent part

'If you have a car licence...

If you obtained your full car licence before 1 February 2001 you are automatically entitled to ride a moped without L-plates (D-plates in Wales).

If you obtained a full car licence after 1 February 2001 you must first complete a CBT course and obtain a DL 196 certificate to validate your entitlement.'

There is a legacy loophole of Grandad Rights I believe; IF you applied for provisional motorcycle entitlement, on your original provisional, before 1989, and passed full car test within two years; then the two-year validity of motorcycle provisional entitlement was removed, and I dont BELIEVE you HAVE to have a CBT, as it wasn't a requirement when you got the entitlement. BUT, if you have updated your licence for any reason in the last twenty years, and as a Trucker, I would imagione you have, due to going to 'Photo-Card', then liklihood is that that will have been 'lost', and your licence wont show entitlement and fighting the DVLA to get it back again will be more of a PITA than just doing CBT....

WHICH you ought to do anyway......

I know you are a profesional driver, but forget that; you know the difference in perspective from the cab of an artic to that in a car, and you knoiw that there are differences; so go in with an open mind... you WILL learn a lot.

I 'sat in' on my G/F's CBT last spring, and I learned something.... and I used to instruct ruddy CBT's! So its worth the doing...

AND if you want to get the catagory on your licence, you'll need CBT Cert to take tests.

Also check the newbie board, becouse there's a ruck of changes due next January that will mean we cant test for more than a 125 on a 125 from then.

Most of them wont effect you; becouse you are well old enough to do 'DAS' if you want; but main one will be if you want to get a 125 and take tests on it, to do it 'on the cheap' you only have this year to do so. From next year DAS style courses are likely to be the only practical way to a full licence for most folk.
